NTSC?

Nimravus (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 13th August 2001, 21:03

If I am to play region 1 dvds, does my tv need to have a NTSC playback function or compatability feature, or can you watch region 1 disks on any tv?
If I can watch them on any tv then what is this feature on certain tvs for?

It really depends on the TV and your DVD player.

Region 1 discs are in the US/Canadian/Japanese TV format called NTSC (named after the National Television Standards Committee of the US, in case you were wondering, which you probably weren`t !).

Most modern UK TV players built in, say, the last 5 years or so tend to have this built in as standard, but maybe don`t scream it out in their manuals (eg my Sanyo 28" does, but is there any mention in the manual - is there `eckaslike).

Was I worried ? No, not really, as my DVD player will quite happily convert an NTSC picture to a PAL one without so much as a grumble, and just a very quick flick of the remote. Some DVD players have a little switch round the back that you need to flick, to enable the on-board picture conversion from NTSC to PAL to take place.

If in doubt, always ask the manufacturer. Which TV/DVD player do you have ? It may be the case there are other owners on here who can help.

Thanks for the informative reply clayts. I`m actually in the process of looking for a dvd player but won`t be getting a new tv for at least another year and just wondered if I would have been able to play region1 discs in the meantime as my current tv isn`t that new. Thats handy to know to look out for a dvd player that will convert it.

Thanks again,
Brian.

Hint : Wharfedale M5 will do the job nicely for £180 from your Tesco`s : no need for a new telly then ;-)
