Page 1 of Archos AV560 - How to record ripped DVD`s from PC

I have just bought the Archos AV560 from Currys, :) this is the same as the AV500 but with a 60GB hard drive. My question is, is it possible to record DVD`s onto the Archos using my PC. I hope to be able to record my DVD collection `at speed` rather than record them in realtime via my DVD player.

Rip to HDD using DVD Shrink & then transfer (via USB\Firewire) if those connections are present on the device, the Archos should show up on your PC as a Mass Storage Device.

Alternatively once you have ripped to HDD use something like Auto Gordian Knot to create Divx version.

Thats all I can suggest off the top of my head.

Thanks Rassilon, no need to shrink, all my DVD`s are backed-up to fit onto a 4.7gb DVD-R. I think I need to convert the DVD to AVI MPEG4 according to the instruction book, but if it will take longer to convert to AVI than it takes to copy the film over in realtime then I don`t think it will be worthwhile.

AGK may do the trick for you, heard of something else today thats called Lathe.

Its cheap too $4.95 to register.

I looked at Lathe and it appears to do everything I need :D , the only problem according to the forums is that it still has a number of bugs and also people had paid for the download but didn`t receive it :( . I have book marked the site anyway and will keep a close eye on it.

With Lathe you are sent a link to download within 90 mins, even I managed that while DICK & produce a sample avi* easily.

Its given very good results on my Tapwave so far utilising the full 480x320 screen, being able to bump up the audio level a bit. Doing a serious avi conversion ATM all as one file (a pleasant change) from "The Unquiet Dead" its a bit bigger than I would like the file size, but its very early days & using the defaults.

With the Archos players\PSP\Tungsten T3 etc you can just click on a icon for the player models defaults. :)

Auto Gordian Knot is a front end\automated script that produced a AVI by using existing tools to produce a avi. It never gave me a full screen on mine (probably tweakable), though that wasn`t a problem as I had to fill three 1Gb SD cards with content for 3 PDA`s to keep me & the kids amused on trains & planes for the family holiday.

Tried other tools (the name of which escapes me) including a demo that encoded 5 mins at a time, when I registered, the program was very prone to lockups.

Dr Divx (trial was good & almost registered it), but then it became Divx Converter which had fixed sizes to produce avi & is apparently coming back as Dr Divx but open source. Alas the Doctor is still out.

* & then sort out the fact the new version of my player didn`t support the sound & had to install a new codec this morning on the pda.
