Are artifacts to be expected @ < £200?

IT Troll (Competent) posted this on Monday, 9th October 2000, 22:42

Are we expecting too much of these budget players and is some artifacting always going to be inevitable at this price point?

What is an exceptable level of artifacting? How clean does the picture need to be to be classed as excellent?

I know this is all probably very subjective but I`d like to get a feel for what I can realistically expect for two ton.

Go down the highstreet and ask someone in Dixons/comet that you are interested in the sony 335/336 and could you see it action.

They can only say No!

HITACHI 505 ROCKS!

Players from the US are of a better quality (I`ve been told)
I`m considering importing one with PAL output.
With Unbeatable and others still waiting weeks for a shipment date, it`ll be quicker.
I`ll post my findings here.

Ironduke, what are you getting at with the sony? Is this player an example of an expensive player that still has artifacts? Or is it an example of how the picture should look?

Most people consider The 735 as a sort of Bench mark for £400 players, and the 335 as a benchmark for sub £300 player`s. SOny doesnt give the owner mp3 playback etc, The reason people buy their player`s is for consistently good audio & video.

How many TV review`s have you seen, they alway`s compare the picture to a sony model?

SOooooooo if you see a sony 335 in action and judge it to be only slightly better then your yelo you have got a bargain, if not you`ve been F*cked!

common sense really IT TROLL:)

Went to Dixons this lunch time but they could not demo the S335 only the DAV-S300 (integrated DVD and receiver) @ £500.

They were playing Mission Impossible so I had a good close look at some of the dark areas in the background. Some minimal pixelisation was still visible in these areas, however these pixels stayed deadly still. Rather than dancing around like they do on the Yelo.

Also went to Comet and Currys this evening and they wouldn`t demo anything I wanted to look at either. They said they are only allowed to demo selected models - in this case top of the range Sony and Toshiba machines. So what is the f**king point of having other players out on display then?

Can I ever expect that quality of image on a £200 - £250 box?

I get no artifacting at all on my Wharfdale 750, but badly on my Daewoo (due to be replaced!)

Same here. My updated Wharf (not the s) has no obvious problems, artifacts have never been an issue & layer changes are spot on.

My mate`s Sony & JVC (both £400 players) have worse layer changes!
