I`m afraid not - it`s a limitation of the laser pickup in the drive unit. Most CD-Rs and CD-RWs are simply not reflective enough to be read by the drive. Adding universal CD-R and CD-RW compatibility would necessitate fitting a better (and, inevitably, more expensive) "dual wavelength" pickup.
All is not lost, though, as a small minority of CD-Rs are actually reflective enough to be picked up by this drive. "Princo" brand discs are among those to look out for. Some people have also reported success with "Vivastar" brand CD-Rs, available from Argos at £20 for a spindle of 50 discs.
