Top Name!
Raymondo,

The Sony strdb940 is an excellent reciever and will complement your dvd player with a big blockbusting sound that puts a smile between your ears at every listen. Partnered with a suitably powerful speaker package-try the Tannoy mxav4 for a good match-the resulting sound will be tremendous.
However,if you feel like being flash then be aware that this model has now been replaced by the new Sony Strdb1070. This unit offers 6.1 decoding, hence offering surround ex and dts es. Had a good listen to this a few days back and can confirm it is indeed the bees knees,if not the best musically in stereo. For £500 you cant go wrong,if partnered with the Tannoy oackage above,an extra pair of Tannoy mx1`s wired in series will do the surround ex business brilliantly.
Either way its your choice, the 940 should be available for a bargain price at all the on line etailers so get searching!
P.S. Just to throw a spanner in the works,Denon have just introduced their new range of Pro Logic 2 recievers(basically subtly revised versions of the 1601/1801/2801/3801 range-now re badged 1602 and so on). These are all competetively priced and top notch for surround AND music.
End of the day mate-its your call.

Hope this helps

Raymondo,

The Sony kit does sound good and is reasonably priced, however - be aware that in the unlikely event of it going wrong, you`re going to have a hard job getting it fixed. Sony after sales support (both to end-users and even their distributors) leaves a lot to be desired.

I`ve recently been through the whole buying experience and several `proper` hi-fi shops are ramping down their Sony stock because they can`t get the support they need when things go tilt.

The Denon stuff looks good, but lacks the sonic presence of the Sony or Yamaha amps. The Yamaha RX-V620 RDS is a great alternative to the Sony. Add on the latest Mission M70 range and you`re... ...sorry. I must stop there. The only real way to find out what you like the sound of is to go and listen to a set-up at a hi-fi shop demo room.

Happy Hunting!

Harry.
