Seriously mate,give us some specifics and we`ll all try to help. Are you sure its not a faulty disc? As far as i know this isn`t RCE so i don`t see where the problem lies. Again,more specifics wouldn`t do any harm.

the story goes like this, my workmate bought a sony dvp s535d player from richer sounds, multiregion, now i lent him u-571 region 1 i have played it on my pc so its fine, but he rang me saying player will not play this disc, is it multiregion

Tell your mate these three simple words, TAKE. IT. BACK.

Sounds like a faulty machine to me,ask them if you can try another one out for a small deposit before your mate shells out more cash(as these films are not bbfc certified,its illegal for Richers to have r1 discs on the premises,so testing in the shop is a no no).
That should do the trick.

Erm, its NOT Illegal for Richers (or any other store or person) to have R1 discs, its only illegal to either resell them, or have them playing in a public place.
