A new widescreen TV - but which one?

SimonMac (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 2nd September 2001, 15:35

Having got a new Toshiba 210 DVD (fantastic), I`m now looking for a widescreen TV to replace my square screened set - expensive game this!

I`m looking to spend a maximum of £800 (on-line prices) which seems to translate to around £1000 at rrp. I`m not concerned about the brand but do have a few key requirements:

- 32" screen size
- Flatscreen
- Audio outputs (amplifier connection)
- At least 2 scarts

Can anyone supply a list of the TV`s I should be looking at?

You`ve only got one sensible option.
Go for a Toshiba and use the fancy composite connectors that only Toshiba TV`s offer. Then you`re getting pure DVD picture. I wish I`d known about this before I bought a Hitachi TV to go with my 210, but I joined this forum too late. I`ll know better next time...
No that there`s anything wrong with the picture I get on S-VHS, but given the choice again, knowing what I`ve learned here, it`d be a Tosh to Tosh.

Composite Connection! I hope your not reffering to connecting the DVD player up via a Composite connection? The only sensible option on how to connect your DVD player up to a TV is Via an RGB capable SCART socket. Any scart cable will do and you may have to enable the RGB output on your DVD player (I hope it has the function to do this). At the very least use the S Video connection rather than composite. I hope this has been of some help.

No no no !
In general you`d be right, but in this case you`re wrong.
The Toshiba TV`s have some kind of connection facility that allows direct connection of cables that allows better picture than even RGB ! I believe it allows seperate connection from the DVD to the colour guns of the TV by means of 3 cables. It`s something only Tosh TV`s offer at the moment.
Forgive me if the terminology is not right, but I`ve seen Tosh and this type of connection mentioned a few times on this forum.Someone back me up here ! What`s the proper terminology ?!

RIGHT !
Having trawled through past messages the actual term for the fancy Toshiba only connection is ` component ` rather than composite. Sorry for the error in terminology.
Only Toshiba TV`s seem to have this feature, at the moment, and it`s regarded as being the purest way of connecting a DVD player. It apparently allows better picture than RGB and still allows adjustment of brightness, colour etc. which is ` locked out ` using RGB. I think if you look at the back of your 210 you`ll see 3 colour coded jack plugs and I think you connect to corresponding ones on the Tosh TV. The handbook will tell you.
So there you go - Get yourself a Tosh TV, connect the DVD by component cables, your SKY to AV1 ( RGB ) using scart, and you`ll be the luckiest son of a gun since the bloke that`s doing Kylie...
For my next trick I`m going to ` accidentally ` tip a can of lager down the vents at the top of my Hitachi TV and claim a new Tosh off the insurance.

Don`t use Heineken ,as that might REFRESH the parts on your TV. ;-)

I`m a scotsman, so it`d only ever be Tennents !
Although I`ve been told that, alledgedly, Irn-Bru or Tizer are the things to `spill accidentally` into electrical items...
Extra sticky apparently. Can`t be dried/cleaned off boards etc....
Shocking behaviour, probably literally...

Have a look at http://avshopdirect.co.uk - they have a 32" tosh 32ZD17B for £699, and a 32W8DB for £779.
Also www.dabsxchange.com have has several 32" toshibas go for around £570 - a 32W8DB went for £496 the other week (seconds, but full warranty, no stand).
Don`t know the full spec of all these boxes, but worth a watch and a fish around....

Just make sure whatever model you go for has the component sockets, otherwise there`s no gain in going for the Toshiba over anything else.If the dealer can`t help the toshiba website is pretty good.
Wouldn`t mind a report when you do get it connected up this way. See if it`s worth upgrading my current TV.
Cheers
Andy
