Yamaha HTIB20 in currys, any good?

gingerone (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 13th September 2001, 08:31

I have seen this Yamaha kit in currys for £3.49 smackers.
It has an amp/receiver plus five small satelites and an active sub, currys are saying it is dolby pro-logic but it says dolby digital on the amp.
Anyone have this and know if it has dolby digital decoder built in?
I was thinking of getting the digitheatre dts but now I`m not so sure!

Surely the VS-10 at £299 is a better deal? (but obviously not from Currys!). I don`t have one, but westy rates it very highly and it does DTS (don`t think the HTIB20 does). Anyway, if you`re still interested in the HTIB20, www.qed-uk.com do it for £299 delivered!

PS The HTIB20 does have a DD decoder, but no DTS decoder

The HBIT40 has both DD & DTS decoders

I asked the same question when was In John Lewis (Kingston on Thames) who sell the HTIB-20 and the VS-10.

Gives an opportunity to listen to both in their Home Theatre room - I didn`t listen to them both, and the specs look similar except for the fact the JL were flogging the HTIB-20 for 349 and the VS-10 at 399. DTS clinched it for me, plus Westys `plugs`, so a VS-10 it was. JL pricematched 299 .

Get yourself into a John lewis`s for a test of both.

I`m not at all disappointed with a VS-10!

Cheers guys, the only reason I fancied this over the vs10 is because it looks like it would be more upgradeable in the future.

That was made as a selling point to me by the salesguy who in my case seemed knowledgeable - as soon as I asked the differences he told me, though I already knew after looking at the Yamaha website.

The first thing he said was that the speakers could be upgraded on the HTIB-20 if I wanted better ones in the future. However, DTS was top of my list (for good or bad) and the Receiver on the HTIB-20 was too bulky for me. The VS-10 is narrower by quite some margin.

On the upgrade front - if I was going to upgrade the speakers that I would probably upgrade the receiver anyway. After all, technology moves on. DTS EX, Prologic II. By the time I upgrade,. there will be others and I`m likely to upgrade the receiver at that stage for the newer sound technologies.

As ever your mileage may vary.

I have just taken a budget seperate route.

The speakers I bought are the Yamaha NS-P220 package which is £155 for five surrounds and a sub. I believe this is the speaker set within the HTiB20.

I managed to get an EOL Sony STRDB840 Amp for £199 and the two together sounds great. It hasn`t cost more than the VS-10 which I looked at and I have an upgrade path option as well

It`s actually cost £54 more than the VS-10, but it still sounds a good deal!

I notice that the sdb site also has the Yammy DSP-A5 (old model, but v well thought of) for £199. As they`re going at £175 second hand - a good buy!
If Westy`s watching, what do you reckon - is the Yammy 620 worth £90 more? Or is the Sony a better bet?
