Need help with this complex setup (Dr 42%er Help again Please!)

A friend of mine has nice Polk Audio floorstanders which he is running off a stereo tube amp connected to a Marantz CD player. After listening to my setup, he is thinking that he should put a sub into his mix. His floorstanders go as low as 40hz but he is missing out on the deeper bass tricks. I agree with him - having heard them, they sound slightly bright and out of depth with some tracks.

His ideal setup is such that the Sub does the bass and crossover management as his amp doesnt have it built in. Is there any sub out there which he could hook up in either of the following fashion, and use the bass management in the sub to control the signal going to the speakers?

CD Player --> Sub --> Amp --> Speakers

CD Player --> Amp --> Sub --> Speakers

I thought that the REL Storm 5 can handle this kind of connection but I am not too sure.

To repeat - he wants the full range signal from the CD Player or the Amp fed into the sub, and use the sub to filter the low frequency stuff out and send a filtered signal to the speakers...

Any help/suggestions are more than welcome. His budget is around £1000-£1500 for the sub.

I urge your friend to have a listen to the Monitor Audio RSW12. It is awsome. Half a kilowatt of power that never gives up. It is incredibly well made and a bargain at £650.

Now I am a confirmed Monitor Audio fan, but this is the first sub by them that I can wholeheartedly recomend.

Conecting would be down to what outputs you have on your amp. Your local dealer will help him with that. Take the hand books along.

I would recommend BK subs these have some great reviews and only cost around the £400 mark. simply connect via the hi level inputs, you attache the sub across the main speaker outputs so it will recieve the full signal.url="http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/Sub_Woofers.htm"]
