faint vetical lines on LCD screen

cirdan (Elite) posted this on Monday, 4th September 2006, 02:33

i have been getting faint vertical lines for a few weeks know. they only appear when there is movement onscreen, panning etc. when the image onscreen is still its fine. i have looked at the screen closeup and there are no lines, i have looked when the screen is blank and again nothing. this happens when watching freeview and dvd.the screen is Sharp LC32P50E.

i went into john lewis about it and they said that if they arrange someone to come out and there isnt a fault then i would have to pay a fee, around £40 i think it was. i dont want to have to pay if there is nothing wrong. this is my problem. its not an obvious fault like the screen turns itself off or dark lines permanently there, this is only visible part of the time so i think that has put me off trying to get it sorted sooner.

i have tried two freeview boxes and three dvd players. ive tried a few scarts and hdmi and component cables. ive tried the screen on a different plug in the room, and moved my speakers and amp incase they were to blame. basically ive tried everything i can think of. the only thing left is a reset, this may not do anything but i thought it maybe worth a go. i wasen`t sure if it was ok to do. will it just take things back to how they were when i first got the screen, if so thats ok as i have my settings noted down.

or is there something else i can try, anyone else come across this? its annoying because apart from this the screen has been great.

cheers.

cheers for the reply, id forgotton id posted.

yes its quite obvious when watching sports. i was watching match of the day earlier and when the camera moved either way the lines appeared, but when its quite still nothing, its fine.

sorry to sound a bit thick but when you say it disappears on component input do you mean using component cables? i am using hdmi at the moment and scart for freeview, i have got some component cables but havent used them for a while. i could try that because i was going to ring the shop back up on monday to see if something can be done.

what is annoying though is the fact that there have been some similar reported problems with this screen, but they are horizontal lines and prog scan, but as ive mentioned mine are vertical, so not quite the same problem, so i have nothing really to compare it with.

thanks

Folks

Not sure if this Helps

Not that This is Relevant for Freeview.

But If you are Playing an NTSC Disk in a Multiregion DVD Player and the Players Output is set to Pal it can Appear with lines in the Picture and sometimes Jittery as well...try setting the DVD Players Colour Output To Auto if possible and Try again

I am not sure if this also Happens if you are Playing PAL Disks with the Output set to NTSC

If You do not have the Auto Option ..ie Only the PAL & NTSC option then try setting it to the Colour Format for the Disk you are Playing and seeing if there is any Improvement

The Player will then Output the correct Colour and Line format for the Disk it is Playing and may stop the lines and Jittery picture.

You Seem to Have Modern Televisions ...so they should be Capable of Processing Both PAL & NTSC in Colour ...so the Need to set the DVD Player to be PAL or NTSC Specific if the Auto option is Present should not be Necessary....unless the Picture Plays in Black & White.

Hope this Helps..if only a little and is worth trying.

to be honest i usually change the setting if i know wether its ntsc or pal. i do this if im using divx. if im playing dvd then i leave it to auto as the player/screen always displays the correct format.

i think ill have it checked out because its just starting to annoy me a little.

cheers.

Correct, using component video cables makes the problem (all but) disappear on my TV

i have just re-attached the component cables. i think apart from a few days when i first got my dvd player back in april i think it was, i have been using hdmi . so that maybe the problem, i dont know. ill try it out tonight, bit late know, but as im getting the lines on dvd and freeview im inclined to think its the screen.

cheers.

I don`t know about the Sharp, but that`s a well known problem with the Toshiba WTL66 series, it`s mainly an RGB scart problem. I was thinking about getting the Tosh LCD (32" version) but this fault is VERY apparent and would annoy me to no end, especially on a TV that costs £600.
