MACROVISION FREE DVD PLAYERS

CuSsMaN (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 23rd October 2001, 00:08

I want to buy a macrovision free DVD player. I`ve heard that the following are macro free:

Alba 104
Bush 2004
Cyberhome ADL528
Dansai
Pioneer DV343
PlayStation 2 with Region X CD
Wharfdale

Can anyone confirm as to whether the following are macrovision free.

Cyberhome 528 isn`t - the 512 is, but I believe that no hack/firmware alteration has been found for 528 yet.

I don`t think the Region X makes the PS2 macro free, but I could be wrong.

Most of the others (including Wharfedale) are only Macro free if you chip them. Alba 104 is (I think) Macro free out of the box though.

There are new restrictions in force that has been introduced by the dvd forum and macrovision. If a player is found to be macrovision hackable in anyway they will take legal action and not allow the company to use the dvd logo which is owned by the dvd forum.Although this may take time to kick in it is happening as the latest sc-2000s cannot be hacked with firmware.Even the cyberhome 528 cannot be hacked. The manufacturer can also lose their licences to produce the players.

The restrictions were in place from the outset - they`re just keener on enforcing them now :-)

Samsung have already been burned; the 511 and later can`t be Macro hacked. Eventually it won`t be possible to disable Macrovision on any player without a chip.

Nope,
You have to download the firmware and blow a CDR and run the upgrade/downgrade - very easy if you have access to a CD Writer.
try http://www.cyberhome-help.de

Richer Sounds used to sell the firmware for £20 - dont know if they still do.

You can get a chipped Pioneer 340 for about £180 with region/macro disabled now.

Another option is buy the Wharfedale M5, backed by Tesco, for £150 and the Macmaster by Sonel for £30 - external device that is handy for stripping Macrovision off all encoded material ;-)

Try http://www.ringos.co.uk if you`re paying by debit/credit card, or http://www.sonel.com if you`re appy paying by cheque.

It works fine on an M5, incidentally.

CuSsMaN

The Bush 2004 is Macrovision free out the box. I have it running through my video as my TV does not have scart.
