So you buy the much talked about Denon AVR 3802.... What next?

F8 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 23rd October 2001, 17:10

Thinking of buying the much talked about Denon AVR3802 (around the £630.00 mark) but quite unsure about the possible speakers to go with it...

I have been toying with the idea of getting the Mission M72 package (£267.00 ) from www.Qed-uk.com plus the Yammy YST-SW320 (£276)subwoofer to go with the system, but I am not quite sure whether these speaker are upto the job with this amp.

So how does this setup sound? Can I get differnet speakers for roughly the similar price like the Tannoy MXAV4 or should I, tenatively may I add, go for a different amp Yamaha AX620 or Sony STRDB1070 or even one of the earlier Denons with the same speaker package.

And by the way what the are these M&K Tripoles I keep on hearing about... Are they any good and at what price.

Once the sound setup is in place, any suggestions on the telly to complement the sound.

Ah, the 3802.

Having just swapped my old 3801 for this model, firstly i can say that its an incredible piece of kit like its predecessor. However, your worry about suitable speakers is daft-as the Denon thrives on power and will give the Mission package something to sing about! Use a pair of Mission m70`s for the rear centre channels and you`re in extended surround heaven.
The Mission pack is handy as it uses the dipole surrounds which THX so often harp on about. Using these on the side walls, then positioning the m70`s behind the seating position about 4 foot apart will give you some pretty amazing rear speaker ambience.
And certainly a sub should definitely be on the menu-no question. The Denon has a lot of power, and whilst the Mission m72`s are ace and powerful little speakers, they`ll need a sub to help them along. The Yamaha 320 is an excellent sub for the money, and will ensure the system shines and has your mates wild with jealousy.
Alternatively, if you fancy going a bit more upmarket, then try the Miller and Kreisel K series surround package which contains the tripoles you mention. I have tripoles in my system and the arc of sound they produce is sensational-however the back up of a good subwoofer is essential. Just plonk a pair of suitable speakers(the m+k`s are rated at 4ohms, so hunt down a pair of matching m+k monitors for the centre rear duties to ensure an even load on the amp), behind the sofa and your away. This package also includes a beefy sub (called a `K9`, chortle), so you will have a complete sysytem that kicks some serious welly. Beware though, the speakers will set you back a cool £1500-so maybe i`m being greedy for you here!
Have a serious think about whether you can accomadate the extra extended surround channels. If you can`t then why not go for the Sony you mention(see my review of it in my amplifier test at www.area450.com`s home cinema section), which has the option of surround ex but is cheaper and still as well built as the Denon. Either that or go for the 3802`s younger sibling the 1802, which is excellent and also includes Dolby Pro Logic2 decoding(also reviewed in my amp article at area450). Paired with the Mission pack and the Yammy sub you should have a great home cinema and music system all in one. You can always upgrade to extended surround at a time when you`ve got room for it!

Hope this helps

That`s great Westy. You certainly have a panache` for writing.

Thank`s for putting everything in it`s context through your insider knowledge and experience.
And with that foresight, I am almost sure to go with the Denon AVR-3802 combined with the Mission M72 Package along with the Yammy 320 subwoofer.

As I have a backlog of old VHS tapes and am a great fan of SCi-Fi, especially Star Trek on the Digibox, I think the AVR 3802 with its Prologic II and DTS NEO:6 will be particularly suited; and it will still have plenty of reserves for when I decide to get the M70`s and maybe even
decide to update to the M& K package you suggested in time !!!
Well one can hope, can`t he !!!

So do you think I have made the correct decision, given this particular situation, with the information you passed on to me?

However this creates a new problem...
With all this great sound catered for. What can you get in the way of a decent picture? There are all these expensive models out there, presumably because they are offering some of the Home Theatre features that we already have and don`t need.

Aren`t there any basic audio & Great picture Tellys about?

Any suggestions..... greatly appreciated.... Otherwise this Home Cinema will have to Shut it`s doors before it starts....

Thanks.

Hello there.

If you can push it Loewe (lerva) make some stunnig sets with a very natural picture. But you will have to spend a bit more than your average Sony.

All the best,

Andrew.

Thanks Andrew.

Went to John Lewis yesterday to check out the Loewe you suggested. Woww!!! You certainly weren`t kidding when you said they were stunning.
They only had the aconda model and it certainly wiped the floor with all the other tellys around it. The picture was the clearest I have ever seen and design to kill for!!!, but at £1800/- I think I will wait until Plasma comes into the same range. Particulary as I heard that the picture quality suffers a bit on digital transmissions.

Toshiba 36zp18p also looks great, but at £1500 its still a bit pricy. Know of any 36` models going for a little less. (like £1350 perhaps)

regards
F8

Hi there you can get to see the set on the following site...

http://www.ishop.co.uk/ishop/719/shopscr11.html

But really really have to see it to really appreciate it.

I have also seen the above set at Bentalls in Kingston. Don`t know if that any good for you. Apparently Sevenoaks hi-fi also stock them though I didn`t see them on their site.

By the way you can read a few reviews on these tellys on home cinema choice online site

Hope it helps.

Hello all,

Yes Sevenoaks do stock Loewe and most of the outlets should have at least 2 of the range for you to look at.

With regards to prog scan and dig inputs, no is the swift answer.

All the best,

Andrew.
