Toshiba auto picture format problem ?
Mate`s just bought a 20WLT56 LCD tv.
The `auto` picture format doesn`t seem to automatically `stretch` 4:3 transmissions to fill the screen, which is a right pain in the ass :/ .
JVC`s auto function allows you to set the 4:3 default to panoramic, meaning you never have to change the format,it just fills the screen regardless of whether it`s a 16:9 or a 4:3.
Anyone familiar enough with Toshiba TV`s to tell us we`re doing summit wrong ???
RE: Toshiba auto picture format problem ?
Not a technical being here, but on mine I had to attach via scart from the DVD recorder and the recorder had to be set to "video" and not RGB.
Also on the TV I had to set in Preferences "Auto format" as it wasn`t ticked.
It isn`t a Tosh though.
RE: Toshiba auto picture format problem ?
Going down a whole new path here, but you shouldn`t have to set your DVD recorder to `video` Batavia.
Your TV`s scart should be able to take an RGB signal.
Even ancient (10 year + ) TV`s can take RGB signals.
Changing your DVD recorder`s signal to video means you`re getting the worst possible picture you can get.
With regard to the Toshiba`s widescreen setting,it would appear their `auto` function is lacking, compared with JVC.
On the Tosh,if it receives a 16:9 signal,it will fill the screen (quite correct).
If it`s a 4:3 signal,it will just show a 4:3 picture (quite wrong).
There is no way of setting it so that it knows the 4:3 picture should be stretched.
JVC allow you to set the 4:3 default to panoramic, which means your screen is always filled, regardless of whether it`s a 16:9 or 4:3 transmission.
Glad I found this out before I ordered my Toshiba LCD,as I`d have been hacked off.
Looks like I`ll stick with JVC.

RE: Toshiba auto picture format problem ?
Is it being fed a digital signal? (Freeview/Sky)
If so, then generally they don`t stretch and toy get vertical black bars.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

Yea, it does, but on the new Sony DVD recorder you have to set it to "video" to get the "special" doo-dah functions to work. Which might be solely a Sony thing.

OK my TV is a Tosh and pic format is set to 16:9 so both 16:9 and 4:3 broadcasts fill the screen. If I set it to auto then 4:3 broadcasts will show in 4:3 and not fill screen. Could it be this simple ? My TV is CRT but I can`t see why it should be any different to LCD menu settings.

RE: Toshiba auto picture format problem ?
I`ve had a play with it myself and I`m not impressed. :/
The choice seems to be as follows:
1/ Set it to `auto` and have 4:3 transmissions (like Sky sports news) in 4:3,with great big black bars at either side.
2/ Set it to `wide` and have 4:3 transmissions fill the screen, but with very noticeable distortion of the picture at the edges.
Absolutely pish Toshiba,try harder. :(
JVC can have an auto function that successfully fills the whole screen without distortion,so you should be able to as well.

So just confirm then that this "wide" setting is not the same as 16:9 setting(and that there is no 16:9 setting either). I will not suggest there is a problem with the TV.

My mate`s Tosh is a 20WLT56
I`m assuming you`ve order either a 32WLT66 or 32WLT68
I was going to go for the 68.
They all have the same widescreen functions:
Super Live 1
Super Live 2
Cinema 1
Cinema 2
14:9
Wide
4:3
I can`t get any of them to successfully switch between 16:9 and 4:3 transmissions so that the screen is satisfactorily filled all the time.
It`s a choice of 4:3 transmissions having black bars,or severe distortion.
My friend is constantly having to switch widesreen modes, which is pish.
JVC`s `auto` function seemlessly fills the screen for 16:9 or 4:3 transmissions, without any noticeable distortion.
It`s just a `one click` setting that you simply don`t touch after initial set-up.
He now wishes he`d bought a JVC and I`m not going for the 32WLT68 any more.
