looking at buying a dvd player that upscales dvd movies to play at a higher rate (ie will look better on hd lcd), have seen a samsung player for around £90.00.

so have i got it right is this what upscaling dvd players do?
do they use hdmi ports?
is there anything i should look out for?

thanks :)

Amazon have a brilliant Sony upscaling DVD player at £74 +p&p. I`ve been using it for a couple of weeks. It plugs into the LCD via an HDMI lead and upscales the image to either 720p or 1080i. The results are excellent, certainly a stop-gap between regular DVD and the hi-def formats, and it frees up a SCART connection on the tv (although you may need an HDMI switchbox at a later date). It has the same standard One-For-All Hack for multiregioning, and R1 stuff looks as good as R2.

PP, which Samsung is it? There is a new one that RRP at £90 and Play.com have for £80 that upscales to 1080P. It also does DivX. It is released for sale on Friday according there website. This one here
No doubt there will be a mr hack for it too. They also have some cheaper Samsung and Toshiba models starting around £50 for a non Divx Tosh upscaler, or £65 for an upscaling 1080i DivX Samsung player

If you can stretch your budget by another £10 get the Pioneer DV400 for £100 multi-region which upscales to 1080p

I`ve just bought one to replace my old Pio 360 machine. Very impressed with it so far

If you can`t afford that then the Phillips 5980 is a cheaper option. If you can get a Costco card, they sell it there for less than £59 incld VAT. The multi-region remote hack is the same as the one for the 5960

purchased a "sumvision" player off ebuyer that upscales (to 1080i), must admit the SCART output compared to HDMI connection (so normal playback vs. upscaled) is noticeable!

bargain imo!

(update, player now seems to have been removed from ebuyer, was £35)

they do have another sumvision player for £45, and for an upscaler with DVD playback I can`t complain about the one I purchased :D

Best one you can get for a combination of price and performance is the Oppo Digital 981HD. Costs about £110 + postage if you buy it directly from the US, but of course you`ll get hammered by customs. The UK reseller does it for about £175.
