Grey Imports-any problems/views

nodrog (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 8th December 2001, 06:40

hi
I`m looking to buy a Sony DAV-S800 and i`ve been told by so called "experts"that the really cheap ones are "Grey imports", and as such have been modified for use in the UK.

Has anyone had any problems/views etc.

Cheers

A "Grey import" is something which has been imported outside of the manufacturer`s official channels. In the case of DVD players, AV amps etc. they are typically imported from elsewhere in Europe, and the only "modification" needed is a change of mains plug, so it`s not really a problem.

I don`t know where you found your "expert", but the "grey import" excuse is often used by sales staff, who are trying to justify why something costs a lot more than it does in another shop down the road. More often than not it`s a lie.

Mike

Thanks for your comments, which only confirmed what i thought originally that the "grey import" and "modifications" are a sales pitch that is unreliable and untrustworthy.

More comments/views/problems welcome.
