Page 1 of Yamaha 320 Sub with the Mission M72`s or the M74`s

If you already had the Yammy 320 sub taking care of the base...
Would it be preferable to go for the Mission M72`s or the M74`s, especially since there is only £80 difference between the two.
The room they will be going in is 12 x 25 foot.

Other thing to remember is that you`d need to spend £50 odd on stands for the 72`s, so might be worth going for the 74`s as the price difference is then minimal. Do you use the system for music as well? Try http://www.qed-uk.com for a good price, plus http://www.hifijunkies.co.uk will price match them if they are more expensive.

The thing is... I ordered M72`s cinema package from QED, but when they finally arrived after 4 wks last week, they were in black and not in beech as I had ordered. And guess what, now they don`t have them in stock anymore.

Anyway as I will be ordeing the acompanying mission stands for the speakers @ £47/- I thought why not just buy the M74`s instead for the extra 40 odd quid as you suggested. But the question is, does one actually gain anyhing by getting the M74`s. Your don`t think the music clarity will be lost by having the M74`s also perform some of the bass duties, as it`s frequency range is wider than the M72`s.

And yes I will be listening to some music from the same sytem as well but it will mainly be a Av system.

I`ve got M74`s, M7DS`s and M7C. At the moment (no sub), I route the LFE to the M74`s using the setup on the amp. After Christmas (with sub :) ) I`ll turn that off.

It`s true that the M74`s go down a lot lower than the M72`s. The way you compensate for that is to alter the knee point of the sub to match that of the mains, so as the mains start to drop off (~40Hz), the sub takes over. With M72`s the knee point is higher (probably around 50-60Hz).

I think the M74s are certainly better thought of as hifi speakers - you`d probably be able to leave the sub for HT only, and let the M74s do the biz on normal music duty - i.e. set the amp up to only use the sub on the .1 channel, rather than running low end stuff through the sub for music (probably by setting front speakers to "large"). As Neon says, you should be able to set the frequency crossover point up to cater for your speakers.
I`d have gone for M74s if I had had the space - I`ve had to do some compromising (small child leans on any speakers within reach) so I`m going for M71s tucked away, with a sub further down the line for bottom end duty.

Whilst indeed the Mission m74`s are great speakers, i don`t believe this is all about getting more for the money. My experience of the M72`s is that they are quite gutsy speakers for their size anyway, and if im not wrong come with foam `bungs` which can be stuffed into the reflex port to adjust the airflow of the bass. Using the 320 sub with these will give a far better sound than the sub with the 74`s. What you`re more than likely to get with the 74`s and the sub is a lot of `crosstalk` in the bass. Don`t forget as the volume rises the subs extension doesn`t go as low as you think, so inevitably the floorstanders would probably be clashing at some point and all you`d get was loads of boomy baggy bass-not good.
So i say stick with the 72`s and select large in the amps speaker menu. Then turn the frequency roll of switch on the Yammy to around 11 0`clock, set the phase switch to reverse, then angle the sub outside one of the speakers so that it faces you slightly but has some wall reinforcement behind it-and you`re away! I use floorstanding Acoustic Energy speakers with my sub, but the Acoustic`s are different types of speaker to the Missions, Missions have a very commercial sound and can be driven by anything, but the Acoistic`s take a lot of guts to get swinging! Hence the Denon 3802 amp!
Try different combo`s and see what you think, running the speakers only with music is far better(the Yammy aint so hot with music, not bad, just not right!). Then using the Yammy-as Richard says- in HT mode only will mean you get the best of both worlds.

Believe it or not Richard, it was your thread and Westy`s reply back in October that tipped the balance in favour of the M72`s. Its good to see you guys still backing your original recommendations. By the way Richard, what do you think of your setup now that, I am sure you have broken them in with a good solid workout. You happy with them?

Westy.. What ever do you mean by mission`s sounding `commercial` as compared to the Accoustic`s??

By commercial, i mean `for the masses`. This means they have a sound that will appeal to all listeners and are easy to drive with many models of amplifier. The Acoustic Energy speakers i use are quite demanding as they have a dedicated low frequency unit which needs lots of power to get it swinging!
The Missions are fine speakers.
