Coaxial and Composite leads, Are they the same????

gingerone (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 19th December 2001, 15:34

Can I use my standard composite lead as a temporary measure to connect my dvd player to my amp until I get round to buying a decent coaxial cable??
Will it still sound ok or will it be crap??

Yes, it will sound just fine. The type of cable you use for a digital connection is nowhere near as important as it is for analogue.

Strictly speaking, the cables are *not* the same - a SPDIF digital cable has a different characteristic impedance to a composite video cable - but it`s unlikely to make a jot of difference in practice (unless the cable is about 50 metres long or something!)
