Multi-region....asking a retailer!
One of the guys I work with has ordered a dvd player from one of his local electrical retailers.
He asked the salesman if it was multi-region and the salesman said he couldn`t comment one way or the other regarding this matter.
Is this normal practice?
RE: Multi-region....asking a retailer!
Absolute horse-s***!!!! I regularly big up the luxuries of r1, point out the benefits, & send customers towards this site & guide them in the general direction of those players which are appropriate.
What does this retailer think he`s gaining by keeping quiet? VCR`s have been available for years with NTSC playback plastered all over the front as a feature for years, why the stick up people`s arses with DVD dooing the same?
RE: Multi-region....asking a retailer!
Look at all the on line retailers, they`re not shy about telling you whether the player is multiregion or not - and Richer Sounds are clear in their catalogues, too. Sounds to me like the player ISN`T, and so yer man is being a bit coy.
RE: Multi-region....asking a retailer!
Normal practice? It`s called "not having a clue about the products you sell" - as practised by Dixons, Comet and other major electrical chains.

Have to agree...... Theres nothing better tha going into Dixons and asking some tech questions about PC`s or Audio equipment and watching the blank look on their faces as they try and come up with a half-baked answer...... :-)

RE: Multi-region....asking a retailer!
Here at Sevenoaks in Leicester I can not remember the last time I sold a R2 player.
All the best,
Andrew.
P:S I can`t remember the last time we won a match.

Cheers everyone....thought as much!
I talked to the guy at work today (Fri) & he informs me that it`s a Sony (not sure which model) R2 player with surround sound etc for £600!
I said that personally I wouldn`t bother buying a dvd player that couldn`t be made multi-region because you have a limited choice of films, special editions etc with just an R2 player.
Thing is the guy at work is not all that interested in watching films on the damn thing, he just wants the surround sound to play cd`s. I told him he may as well buy a hi-fi system but he says he can`t get the Dolby 5.1 on a hi-fi system.
Anyhoo, he`s parting with his money this afternoon apparently!
Thanks for the help.

Ascom dog your mate is a salesmans gift. Unless he has an amp with various DSP surround modes or the superior Dolby Pro Logic 2 he wont get any surround out of a standard CD or DVD player.
BTW if you connect a DVD or CD player to a surround amp and switch on the surround DSP features it sounds so crap you usually switch it right off.
£600 on a DVD player and he has no clue. Bloke in Comet/Dixons etc must have laughed all the way to the pub.

I agree with Spinalize - if your mate thinks he`s going to get 5.1 sound from ordinary CDs, he has a lot to learn before he should even think about buying a DVD player. (Unless he`s thinking of DTS-encoded CDs perhaps, but those are not exactly commonplace.)

It`ll be the Sony S800 av system, rather than a DVD *player*, surely. He could get it multiregion for less....
