cheapest xvid compatable dvd player....

MADTheOgster (Elite Donator) posted this on Wednesday, 17th June 2009, 19:43

wow, never thought i`d need to ask this question lol. but as i`m now a 1 pc family, i need a (really really really) dirt cheap dvd player that can output pal 50 from an ntsc disc, without creating the lip synch probs that plagued the early models....

ironic really, i fist joined these forums all those years ago to Give advice on this kind of thing lols...

budget is literaly rock bottom, i`m hoping to pay no more than £25, but if one can be found with either recording facilities or freeview built in, i`ll save for a bit & try to push £50. i know i`m asking a lot, but it`s all i have the means for at the moment.

Let`s get this straight, Oggie - you want reliable multi-region with no lipsync, ditto with DivX and XVid, and ideally with recording and freeview - you don`t want much, do ya? :p

I don`t know, these noobs! ;)

Seriously, I wanted something similar recently (the first two items, not the tuner and recorder aspect), but had to concede and spend a bit more than I`d hoped to make sure it was reliable. I narrowed it down to the Sumvision Phoenix Premium, and the Phillips DVP3980, which both also upscale, if you`re interested (it seems to be the in thing these days)

I went with the Phillips, although it was about a fiver more than the Sumvision - I paid about £45, but it really is a good performer.

I`ll be interested to see if anyone can recommend a machine for £25...

My Phoenix was £35. It`s one of the first gen ones though, 1080i upscaling not 1080p and tbh, I`ve had 0 issues with it.

Dunno if anywhere is still selling them but I`d expect them to be very cheap now. Also it was mentioned it doesn`t do resume play, just found out the other day that it *does* but only if the unit isn`t powered off first (not much good if yer gonna turn it off for a few days though ;) )

Still got my old Panny DMRE50 too, unplugged and virtually unused LOL but it doesn`t do xvids :-/

pal-50 output from an ntsc source is a must, as my housemates tv can`t handle pal-60 or ntsc, so as you can inagine, the upscale feature isn`t that important ;) pal 50 & xvid are the only things i really need, the other stuff would just be a bonus.

I got an Onn player for £18 from Asda which wasn`t the greatest, took ages to load divx from a hard drive but had HDMI. I actually sold it to a mate, and it`s exploded on him (4days after I threw out the box because I was moving :( ).

I also got one from Pixmania which had a USB reader, but had a 2gb limit, but you only found this out when you read the instructions :(

It used to be so easy......

A trip to Tescos or Asda is definitely your best bet.

Managed to put my old mk1 Xbox through the lite-on, so that cured both the b&w issue & the lip synch probs :)

saved by my trusty old Xbox again ;)
