HOME THEATRE KITS - help

Jamie041 (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 14th November 2000, 21:25

I would like to expand my listeneing situation with my recently acquired LECSON 900 DVD.

Can any one recommend either a good amp and speaker set or reciever tuner and speaker set. I am willing to pay upto £500 and would like some small surround speakers. I am looking for a set that has 6 channel connectivity.

Thanks

JIM

Newest amp/receiver on the block is Denon AVR1601 for £300 (probably cheaper if you shop around) - 5/5 in December`s What Hi*Fi

Failing that, Home Entertainment (Dec 2000) reckon the Pioneer VSX709RDS which is a pretty good all-rounder (i.e. music too), again for £300 (and again, shop around)

Speakers : if you shop around you can get some good deals. Richer Sounds (try http://www.richersounds.com) do cheapo speakers for example (eg Tannoy Mx1s £75 a pair, Tannoy MxC for a ton = £250) and also an Eltax Moviemaxx speaker kit (I`ve e-mailed Eltax to find out what speakers are in this deal : no subwoofer tho`).

Shop around, mate : half the fun in this game.

You connect the DVD by digital inteconnect for best results, by the way!

Coming from El Cheapo land...

Can`t recommend Videologic Digitheatre enough - £215 via QED web site, quick delivery - digital/coaxial connection, 5 speakers + sub woofer. Handles everything I`ve thrown at it (bar DTS - shockingly), Pitch Black was pretty much as good as at the Warner Bros cinema I saw it at last night (why did I do that when I own the DVD? hmm)

Ran Army of Darkness (stereo) through it on the Pro-Logic setting and hey presto v nice surround sound. Does it all.

Smallish rear, smallish front, normal size middle speaker. V good sound.
If you want to blow the money, the DTS option is prob v good - and you`ll have change from £500 - > £100 worth!

I agree that the Viddylogic is a good option for those on a limited budget but it is only really any cop in smallish rooms.

Take your point tho` - you gets whats you pay for.

Incidentally, the Eltax Moviemaxx speaker system is a specilly created surround speaker package and is not any of their other quality speakers bundled into a package. For £119 it`s worth checking out from Richer altho` you`ll probably have to give them a ring about it (and say you saw it in December`s What Hi Fi - may just be a WHF Readers only special). Certainly isn`t on Richer`s website, anyhoo...

http://www.richersounds.com/
for £260! so not so free speakers! No stock at the moment!
