Right now, is a "simple" widescreen TV enough ?
Hey guys,
I`m seriously considering buying a widescreen TV to replace my tiny Matsui TV that I`ve used for the last five years. I`ve spotted a Philips TV for £320 that`s got good reviews in these forums.
Thing is, is there any point in me getting this TV at the moment, what with TV "changing", with plasma & flat screens now all the rage ?
Thanks,
Brian
If you want plasma or any other truly flat screen, you have to pay through the nose - at least ten times what that Philips TV costs. If you don`t want to pay that much then the Philips is perfectly adequate.
It`s a bit like asking "is there any point in me getting a Ford Mondeo, what with these Ferrari/Porsche/whatever now all the rage"? ;-)
You know what I mean anyway - a plasma display is a very expensive, luxury item, and that`s unlikely to change for the forseeable future. You`re not going to see Wharfedale branded plasmas in Tescos for £250 for quite a long time yet!

Depends what you mean by ` simple `.
From friend`s experiences the Wharfedales/Naiko`s/Goodmans of the world are best avoided as they really are cheap and nasty. They only offer 2 aspect ratios ( 4:3 or 16:9 ) which means no auto formatting of non-widescreen transmissions. It means that a lot of programmes would make Lena Zavaroni look like Dawn French...
A Phillips ain`t cheap and nasty though !
I think the model you`re speaking about is the 6006 ?
I was looking at one in John Lewis on saturday. They want £480 for it and it gets cracking reviews, especially for sound.
I would try and get the biggest screen you can get right now, at least a 28" widescreen. You can have the basics but then you see Tvs with Virtual Dolby Surround, flatscreen, built in Digital Decoder, etc. I would concentrate more on a flatscreen than the sound. Philips are good but when you add in the other homecinema things in future the sound will be coming through those speakers. Having said that, I got a Philips 28PW6515, about 4 models better than the 6006 for 490 quid incl free delivery, stand and 5 yrs guarantee. It has a flatscreen and virtual dolby surround. I think its great and until Plasma screens become a lot more affordable I will stick with it.
