Need a decent Blu-Ray player which also does multi-region DVDs....

Alan Titherington (Reviewer) posted this on Friday, 2nd December 2011, 16:51

I rarely frequent this forum, but would be rude to slam it in `General` :p

Have recently purchased myself a nice little 37 inch LED TV, and now my review friends are beginning to send Blu-Rays I thought it would be nice to get something decent to play them on outside the computer and my headphones.

it`s vital that it plays multi-region DVDs as well though, and from what I`ve seen, only the 3D Blu-Rays do this with any sort of success.

..and, I`ve just ordered the Alien Anthology as well (£14.99 - bargain!)..which means I`m wanting a player even more badly!

Any suggestions? Around the 100 / 120 quid mark is possible...but willing to haggle.

All Panasonic Blu-ray players can be made multi-region for DVD via remote hack.

Apparently this Toshiba from Richer Sounds can be made multi-region for Blu-ray as well by installing Australian firmware...

I have this

http://www.richersounds.com/product/blu-ray/panasonic/dmpbd45/pana-dmpbd45

for just over a year, it`s £60 now, and I`m happy with it as a bog standard blu ray player (no internet), and it happily plays DVDs from any region. Mine plays divx/xvid and avchd no problem, however the newer models also do mkv, which may be worth considering.

We have a Panasonic DMP BD35, multi regioned (for DVD`s only) thanks to the Harmony remote hack.

Brilliant player, we use it for everything as the picture and sound are far superior to the Samsung DVD recorder we used to use for DVD`s.

CD playback is very good too. Only gripe is it`s bloody slow but think this has been resolved on newer models.

All the best

Gerald.

Probably a bit late now, but I just bought one of those Toshiba (never though I`d see the day they did BD decks) BDX1200 players from Richer Sounds for the bedroom as it`s cheaper to run than the PS3. Cost me £50 as they had `sold out` of the £40 sale units, but still not bad for a BD player. Made it multi-region for DVD and BD in about 30 seconds by applying the Aussie firmware.

So far I`m relatively happy. It`s a real budget deck, so mixed case LCD display and not the quietest in operation, but loading and traversing are very swift (quicker than my PS3) and it played one disc that my stand-alone Sony and the PS3 got stuck on (because of a defect in the playing surface). The Tosh displayed a line on screen and just kept going, where as the others either got stuck in a continuous loop and hung or eventually skipped over three minutes of the film.

I don`t think the noise issue will be a problem in a living room, but watching at low levels in the bedroom I can hear the disc spinning more than I would like. The more expensive Toshiba player (can also be multi-regioned) should be better in this regard and it also does 3D if you like that sort of thing. Was looking at LG and Philips players before the Tosh, but went for it because it was the cheapest and easiest to hack.

heh...not too late. Have been a bit slow on the uptake, but always good to get more ideas! :-)

I`m still trying to chase down that BD550 hack that seems to have been removed from the net!
Found a couple of places for the 560 and some relating ot alternative hacks (netflix etc) on the 550 but also removed.

Rather odd really...

That was one of the reasons I went with the Tosh. I`d have preferred the BD550, but the hack was elusive.
