Can Dvd players catch viruses?! HELP!

fatjedi (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 12th May 2002, 00:17

I have an Oritron 600 - Not a great model I know, but it has served its purpose well for the last two years...Until now.

I rented Arnie`s 6th Day from Blockbusters yesterday, watched it, took it back, tried to watch some of my own Dvds tonight and it will not recognise most of my discs. Keeps saying "not a valid disc". All of which have played without problems before.

Has my player caught a virus from the 6th Day disc?!

If not, what else could have gone wrong?

Thanks for your help!

Dean

Try a DVD lens cleaner (about a fiver from Woolies) : Blockbuster discs tend to have been looked after with Brillo pads, so can cause some players real problems, usually leaving a coating of popcorn grease and other sundry oddments in people`s player trays :(

In theory a DVD player could catch a virus. For example some players could have their firmware flashed into a wrong version. Who would want to do something like that God knows.

Thanks for the suggestions...

I`ll pop over to woolies ASAP to see if that can solve it!

With regards to having the Firmware flashed into the wrong version, can I just reinstall the firmware disc that I have to see if that clears the problem up?

Maybe a PAL/NTSC button on the back of the player (just like on Philips dvd710)
