CDR...?

Whysigh (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 18th May 2002, 13:07

Hi,

I have a Thompson TV/DVD Combined, 28" model, cant remember the full model name.

I have used the region code hack and it worked to great effect, now am just a lil unhappy that the damn thing that cost me just under £1`000 wont play CDR`s. It will play official DVD`s and VCD`s but I want to be able to play those special disk that you get of ya mates! you know...the gold disc`s? :-)

Is there any physical way I cant get to play CDR`s on my system?

If any of you know either way then please let me know...otherwise am taking the whole hunk back to where I bought it!

Cheers

Nope. You might be able to get a few discs to work (Princo branded CD-Rs and CD-RWs are usually a good bet), but the vast majority of CD-Rs are not playable.

This issue is pretty common, by the way. Basically, there are two kinds of pickup units used in DVD players - the single wavelength type, which can read DVD, DVD-R and CD but can`t read CD-R reliably, and the more expensive double-wavelength type, which reads everything. Your Thomson obviously has the former type.

For this reason, you should always assume that a DVD player will *not* play CD-Rs, unless it specifically says on the box that it will. It`s ironic that your £1000 Thomson set-up doesn`t play them when there are £79.99 DVD players that do, but there you go.

Thanks for your words of knowledge mike!

At least I know am never gonna get the damn thing to work for CDR`s

Maybe I should invest in that £79.99 one and stick it under me new telly, just so I can watch those special fims! hehehehhe

Cheers!
