Macrovison affecting DVD signal going directly into TV?

gregmc (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 20th May 2002, 05:52

I just bought an NEC NDV-22R DVD player and plug it directly into my Phillips TV via the RCA video socket. (on the back of the tv)

All is fine except when movies are playing, the brightness goes up and down every second or so.

From my limited looking around on the Internet it looks like this might be a symptom of Macrovision.
But thought that wasn`t an issue on TV`s, just VCR`s

I plugged the DVD into my VCR`s video in and got the same problem.

Any ideas?

By RCA do you mean `phono socket`? Do you have a scart connection on the TV or DVD? Is this a UK System?. If it is a UK system & there are scart connections, & you go direct to the TV there should be no problems. It sounds typical of Macro. But Macro normally activates when going through a Video.

Yes, Macrovision can in some cases affect direct TV connections. (It`s more an issue with projectors, but it can cause problems with ordinary TVs too.)

It can be fixed, but you may have a tough time doing so, as TV manufacturers tend not to acknowledge that this problem exists. My parents had this problem with a Panasonic set a few years ago; they were told that the TV was performing within spec and that the tapes they were playing (rented VHS) were at fault.

At that time, Macrovision wasn`t widely known about or publicised. It wasn`t until I read an article by Barry Fox in What Video magazine that I realised what was happening, and got the technician to come back and fix it properly (I even had to show him the article before he would acknowledge it).

Yes, phono sockets, I`ve got 3 of em on the back of the stereo tv

Yellow - Video in
White - Audio in [stereo]
Red - Audio in " "

Don`t know what a scart connection is.

And I`m in Australia

Greg

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply

The TV`s long out of warranty, but other than this one thing it works
perfectly.

Don`t suppose you remember any more details on this article, or what
the problem with the TV was?

Cheers,

Greg

Hi, yes it macrovision, you get it on practically every copyright video/dvd these days. Unfortunately macrovision to my knowlegde is transported through the lines on your tv picture(the ones that usually are used by teletext signals) therefore you cannot get rid of it simply by moving around the scart or av sockets...i think you might need to put a small "sync" at the bottom of your picture, thus blocking the macrovision signal. You can find a picture enhancer machine from most electronic shops(they should have the "sync" option on them). This is all in theory..but i think it might work!!!

Hi

I had the same problem some years ago, got round it by purchasing a box which disabled macrovision,

I assume they would post anywhere. If not I`m sure you find a local electrical/visual shop that will sell you one.
