old cd player - can it be upgraded ??

I have a Marantz cd-52 player. Can it be upgraded to play CD-RW and MP3 ?
[I`m thinking on the lines of firmware as with dvd players]

I`m 99% certain that the answer is no, unfortunately.

Maybe you could get a cheap £30 DVD player to cover the mp3s and CD-RW and keep your Marantz for the originals?

It may be possible by re-aligning the laser, and turning the laser output power up, but I would not reccomend it, it would make the player very unstable and shorten the life of the laser considerably.

As bigfan said, you would be better off buying a cheapie DVD player for this facility, and keeping the Marantz (CD-52 is a cracking machine, by the way) for the originals.
