ntl investigation pop-up

jaykey (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 28th August 2003, 15:30

Was surfing aimlessly, including some sites more suited to the over 18`s, when got a pop-up saying "warning, ntl investigation" which also gave my ip address and had a link for further info, whcih I didn`t use. Any other ntl users seen this? Is is something genuine? Perhaps it`s a coincidence but my firewall has been under heavy attack in the last couple of days but since getting this message (around 7 hours ago) the attacks have stopped.

Is it against the T&C of NTL to be looking at `ahem` natural interest `ahem` sites, then?

Not entirely sure, though I would imagine so. Should make it abundantly clear we are not talking anything too dodgy here, also have been with ntl several years. The whole thing just seems odd. The pop-up message was not in ntl`s usual style/colours and if they are monitoring or investigating users why on earth would you get a pop-up to tell you?

I would ignore it, could be someone trying to get you to click a link that will install a virus or back door software. If NTL really want to get hold of you, they can send you a letter. Or cut off your internet :-)

BTW I have been with them for a few weeks now and havent seen any popups like that, but I dont surf adult websites normally.

I`m also with NTL and my firewall has also been on overtime this week :/ Don`t normally get any attacks at all, very strange :/

Haven`t had anything like this and I`m on NTL too. Don`t know what technology they`re using now but if you click on the server status link...

You can see they`re already able to forecast problems...(checkout the "posted" date!)

Funnily enough, ive been on NTL BB for about 3 months and have been undersiege from access attempts but a couple of weeks ago i changed from ZoneAlarm to Sygate Personal firewall and attacks have virtually stopped. Ive had 4 port scans and thats about it.

Additionally sygate is loads better than zone alarm. It doesnt hog resources and lets you see where an attack is coming from.

Nick,
If you`re in stealth, you`re in stealth. Don`t see how changing your firewall will reduce no. of attempts. Maybe Sygate doesn`t report them?

I know some people have problems with ZA, but that`s PC`s for you. I`ve never had one and it only uses about 3MB of RAM - not exactly hogging resources..

yup sj sounds the same as my experiance....I was on dvdsquueze.com. Might be cause the product has been axed by the US courts......Went to buy then the pop-ups came. When leaving the site and re-entering it happened again. Obviously internet washer pop up but I had a still image on the web page of my "c" drive folders :o
