Page 1 of LATEST HOAX WARNING! *URGENT*
PCs & Mobiles Forum
Title amended by moderator - not a virus, as Rik thought, but a hoax
Received this in an e-mail, and upon following the instructions, I found my system did indeed have the virus. Hunt and destroy, guys - follow below 100%, and you will be fine...
--
Sorry but I received a "teddy bear" virus yesterday and suggest you follow these instructions.
Subject: Need to check your computer for a virus
Unfortunately, a virus has been passed on to me by a contact. My address
book was infected
Since you are in my address book, there is a good chance you will find it in
your computer too. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton
or McAfee antivirus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before
damaging the system.
It is sent automatically by messenger and by the address book, whether or
not you sent e-mail to your contacts.
Here`s how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it:
YOU MUST DO THIS.
1. Go to start, Find or search option.
2. In the file folder option, type the name jdbgmgr.exe
3. Be sure you search your C: drive and all subfolders and any other
drives you may have.
4. Click "find now" or "search".
5. The Virus has a Teddy Bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN
IT!
6. Go to Edit! (on the menu bar) and choose "select all" to highlight
the file without opening it.
7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It will then go
to the Recycle Bin.
8. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS
BOOK, SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOKS.
To Do This:
a) Open a new e-mail message
b) Click the icon of the address book next to the "TO"
c) Highlight every name and add to "BCC" (which means blind copy)
d) Copy this message and paste to e-mail

Rik, all!!!
I haven`t even read the whole post, just the first 2 lines and a response saying yep.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is not a virus on your system!!!!!
In fact it`s quite an old hoax and the file is a part of your OS!!!
DO NOT DELETE IT!!!
If it`s too late - like I said haven`t read your post(s) (2 bottles of wine.... :/ ) there is a repair.
It is weird that there is an icon that is a bear and that`s what the mail relies on - you thinking it`s dodgy and deleting it.

Right, just read your post and it is the one I was thinking about.

No mate, should read "follow below 100%, and you will NOT be fine".....
Come on, do you really think people would be getting mails saying Norton etc. aren`t picking this virus up? Think about it....
Ste

RE: LATEST VIRUS WARNING! *URGENT*
Not this old chestnut again, I wonder how many support calls I will get next week from f**king idiots.....errr I mean my customers at work having followed the instructions in the mail, rather than the company procedures.

RE: LATEST VIRUS WARNING! *URGENT*
Yeah, this one has been doing the rounds for ages now. Just Google for `teddy bear hoax` to see the extent of the mayhem.
It`s a good example of `social engineering` - if people are so willing to follow instructions in an unsolicited e-mail, it`s hardly surprising that so many folk get inflicted with real trojans and viruses.
At least this hoax is relatively harmless (and easily put right). It could have been a lot worse.
Mike
Look guys, I`m really sorry - I was told by a lot of people it was a real virus, and yes, the strange logo did throw me. As someone has said above, there is a repair (it only affects you if you are a Java programmer, I believe).
