16x dvd rom

80gig hd on ide/raid
win xp
avg nti-virus (up to date)

been happening for about 2 weeks (since i built the pc) i double checked the hardware, and that seems ok all new parts except the 2 80gig hd`s all i can thaink of is it may a driver probably from the mobo as it was a bitch to set up, the thing that`s most strange is the fact that xp does not realise that it`s been shut down improperly ie no error report/disc scan on startup ? and when i say it shuts down without warning i mean if you blink you`ll miss it, it`s that fast it goes from normal use to the mobo post screen in about 2 seconds, also i`ve been keeping an eye on the cpu usage and it seem ok, and there are no odd programs running etc,

again any help would be apreciated.

edit- i use the newest version of kazaa lite, but not very often as i generaly prefer bitt-torrent (been using this for many months no-probs)

could be a million and one things, but first to check are:

1. memory - make sure its all fitted nice & tight

2. Graphics card - same here.

3. get yourself a program like speedfan which monitors temperatures inside your pc. Make sure you`re not running it at egg frying temps.

4, the PSU - what wattage is it, and is it a cheap & chearful job?

5. the old helpdesk favourite - have you tried a format & reinstall?

Anything in Event Viewer? Is it Blue Screening (it doesn`t sound like it), in that case turn off Auto Reboot so that you can get the Stop code.

hi neal/wrabbit, everything seems to be fitted ok (double/triple checked)
it`s not running hot, and it`s a 400watt psu + i have 2 extra fans installed, and i have tried formating but the problem persists, tho i can leave the pc on overnight with no probs, but when in use it can shutdown twice in ten minutes? no blue screen of death or anything like that but don`t know what a stop code is, as i`ve said in a previous post the mobo was a pig to set up, having to get updates/patches from gigabyte to run xp properly, so i have a feeling it`s something to do with that which is a bit s***y as the mobo`s only been out a few months so you`d think it would be sorted for xp ? anyway i think i`ll stick millenium on one of the other drives and see what happens (annoying after i just paid £80 for xp-home)

Are you sure that its not Blaster or a variation on the virus? Its worth running a check just in case.

Stop code is what`s written on the BSOD. Does it just go black and power off or reboot?

Experienced something similar last week as a result of a new PC getting/comming with MSBlaster after a few mins on the net getting all the updates,

RPC error message followed by "PC shutting down by NTAUTHORITY"

Once AV was installed & the virus removed all was well (had to get the patches/updates done over my local network, not the ASDL line I was configuring for Bro-in-Law).
