Smudged short cut icons on Quicklaunch toolbar
A real puzzler this one. Today, all the shortcut icons on my quicklaunch toolbar (XP Home OS) have turned into square "smudges". They are also the same when I click on "All Programs" after hitting the start key. All the programs are here, all working perfectly, shutting down and starting up properly too. When I delete the the (shortcut) smudges from the toolbar they appear perfectly in the "recycle bin" as proper shortcut icons. Also when I create new shortcuts from the program list, they are as they should be on my desktop. When I then drag them to the Quicklaunch toolbar they turn out smudged!
As usual, ANY help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks...Flyer

Try this it worked for me.
Right click the desktop, properties, appearance tab, item box: select
caption buttons and make sure that the size is set at 18.

Sounds like your DPI gone a bit funny. It happens when the screen resolution is 1280x1024 and DPI is set to 120. To check DPI, Display Properties, Settings tab, Advanced button.
If this is the case, but the resolution is too small if you revert, try using large icons, etc from the Appearance tab.
Hope this helps

Thanks dollar for your time mate. I tried doing what you suggested but it was already at 96DPI. I then tried changing the bit amount on colours. Went from one extreme to the other and after doing something it has all got back to normal! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
