Lucky Search overides Google!

Faramir (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 9th January 2004, 20:35

I am having problems with a nasty programme that overides my homepage (google) and inserts itself as the new homepage whenever I dial-up. I get a search engine called LuckySearch and another one called Globe Finder. I have tried changing the homepage under internet options, but it still appears everytime i use the internet. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this annoying problem?

Thanks :/

Sounds like you`ve got spyware or a browser hijacker. You need to download Lavasoft Ad-Aware and/or Spybot Search & Destroy, both free for personal use.
Ad-Aware here.
Spybot here.

Hmm...this kind of nasty bugger usually comes from `Adult intrest` sites....... ;)

Anyway open regedit and open

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearch

and edit the search URL to google. You can also search other keys in the internet explorer section for mention of these sites and replace them with google too

Do the registry thing after you`ve run spybot, though - if you`ve got a homepage hijacker, it`ll just put its own settings back and you`ll be back where you started.

Thanks for the advice, but I am not sure what you are telling men to do. What is `regedit` and where do I find it? I need some more help!

Regedit is a program for editing something called the Registry. This is where windows keeps its settings, etc. To open it click on Start, Run. type in Regedit and then follow the instructions above to remove the offending entry.

HTH.
