Help! needed with USB 2port PCI card on WIN 98

denon (Competent) posted this on Friday, 30th January 2004, 20:36

Hi everyone, hopefully someone can help with this little problem, basically i help out up the local school and look after the donated PC`s.

The school bought a new HP all in one printer/scanner for the special unit class but only comes with USB connection and as these PC`s are getting on now there is no USB port on them so i bought a 2 port USB card and slotted it in to the pc,all went well Windows 98 detected card and loaded the drivers from the 98 cd and then had to re-boot.

All great me thinks, checked device settings but got a problem on the root hub,if i try to update driver i get the dredded blue screen.

the fault reads as:-NTKERN.VXD in the propeties box.

i`m wondering if i need an updated driver rather than the 1 on the win98 cd.

anyone help please!!!!!!!!

what version of 98 is it, i believe you need the one with usb support windows 98 second edition or else it dosent work, have a look also at microsofts website with the error code as well. Also are there any drivers with the card you shouldnt have to ren-install the 98 ones, do a search for 98 compatible ones for the cards company that maybe the problem also as a lot of companys now are tending not to support below me. i am also pretty sure you can buy a usb to serial (printer) adapter but this wont give you usb 2 speeds, have a look at maplins maybe, As its a school i think the an upgrade of pc if they have the funds would suit, new case 30 notes, motherboard 30-40, basic processor, 30-60, harddrive 30-50, memory 40-50, graphics card 30-40, its just the software that will be the highest cost but has its a school i am sure they can get xp on a special licience for about 100.

Cheers Sheppy,it`s not second edition so maybe this is the problem, the school does have a second edition disc so maybe i should format and put that on instead,i`ll have a look for 1 of those leads aswell.

cheers :D

Another option i forgot to mention, dependant on ram, harddisk space upgrading to windows me would probably solve the problem, pretty cheap if you shop around.

I had the same problem a couple of years back (I was using the first edition of Win 98) and it was only last year when I flattened my hard drive and upgraded to Win 2000 that I got the USB 2.0 card to work.

So either upgrade your operating system or stick with what you`ve got and buy a USB 1.0 card if you can get it.

When I used to work in PC World, I sold several of these, they are ONLY for Win98SE and above, and will not function correctly on Win98 original release.

Here`s a link to Microsoft`s details of USB support in WIN98. It does say that some controllers are not supported by the standard WIN98 drivers.
