Page 1 of No dial tone problems
PCs & Mobiles Forum
Hi there,
I need help(again), thats all I ever seem to need these days!
My girlfriend has just bought a new pc to use on the internet however when we connected it up to the phone line the computer comes back with a no dial tone message. We then tried a laptop that connects to the internet all the time, albeit at a different location , but got the same result.
The phone line is working, works fine with a phone plugged in. We tried using the socket where the line first enters the house and tried forcing the modem to dial without the dialing tone but still no luck, I`m all out of ideas now, hoping someone out there has some!
Any help would be much appreciated
Rob
RE: No dial tone problems
sorry to state the obvious, but have tried swapping the modem leads over.

Sorry forgot to mention that, yes we`ve tried 2 or 3 different modem leads. Its been suggested that we contact BT and have them increase the gain on the line but I cant see this working somehow its a strong clear tone when you listen on a regular phone.
Don`t think it`s a gain issue as that doesn`t cause what you`re seeing, but can cause connection to fail or be slower.
If you`ve got the modem speaker turned on can you hear the dial tone when you try to dial out?
My first suspect would be the modem leads as already suggested. They can be notoriously dodgy.
What error do you get, and do you get the exact same error when Wait for Dial Tone before dialling is cleared?
Do you have adsl?
No, it`s a dial up connection we have, when we turn up the modem volume there is no dial tone at all . I have also checked the leads they seem fine too.
batavia, I dont think it has a network card but I`ll check just in case.
Good morning Rob.I am experiencing exactly the same problem. As you posted yours over a week ago I was wondering if you had solved it!
Look forward to hearing from you
Hi there Frank,
Unfortunatly we couldn`t solve the problem, as a last resort we were going to call in a BT engineer, however my girlfriend`s moving out of that house soon so there seemed no point continuing trying to make it work.
She`ll just get a new connection in her new house, If it helps all fingers seemed to point towards the line being at fault hence the BT engineer.
Sorry I couldn`t be any more help, hope you have more luck with this than we did!
Rob
Morning Rob
Thanks for the reply. Think I`ll just have to sign up for broadband! Do you think this is a marketing ploy by BT???
