cant connect to aol broadband
hello i am doing this for a friend who needs help.
the problem is she now cant get connected to aol broadband as an error keeps coming up saying it could be a firewall that is preventing her from getting connected.
she has never installed a firewall. aol told her to reinstall aol 9 and remove her anti virus but that still hasnt worked. i have checked the modem and it is working fine.
she has a dell pc and is on windows xp and has aol 9 the broadband connection was working fine for months. so if anybody has any ideas as to what to do to fix this problem your help will be most welcome.
thanks in advance. ;)
leave AOL now!
seriously. they are bad news. I`m sorry I can`t help further but that is the best advice I can give other than have you tried calling their tech desk?

RE: cant connect to aol broadband
aol told her to reinstall aol 9 and remove her anti virus but that still hasnt worked :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o AND SHE HAS NO FIREWALL :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o sorry but thats just numb. james is correct about aol, and this is not the first post that has stated that aol has told them that anti-virus software is not required on aol 9.0, but this is bollox, also the fact that she has no firewall does not help at all, if i where you i`d download AVG free edition (anti-virus) from here http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php then download a free firewall such as this http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp then some spyware software such as this http://www.safer-networking.org/ and this http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ put all this on a disc and install it on her pc, run the tests, see what happens, if the modem is working correctly and any visible probs have been weeded out, go to internet options / connections, and make sure it is configured to detect connection automaticly, (however if the connection is via usb, then use the software provided) once online do a free online virus check here http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm and here http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
and i can`t stress how important it is to use a firewall, i still get around 1000 attacks an hour due to pc users that don`t have firewalls, hijacking and fraud is at epedemic levels simply because people are not properly protected, if you get stuck with any of the links i posted please feel free to pm me or post here :)

RE: cant connect to aol broadband
i know you have said that the modem is working correctly but is it actually connecting, how many lights are there on the modem and what is the status of thhe onscreen arrow icons in the tool bar bottom right, i had the same sort of problem and in the end turned out that aol had disconnected the service, but it took hours of reinstalling before i could even convince them to check this
