it will only boot in safe mode if the 512mb is also in slot 0 and then the slots 1 + 3 have the two 1 gig sticks. At this ppoint it will boot in safe mode. If i go to the bios with all 3 sticks in i have just over 2512 of memory. It seems to load as far as the windows welcome screen and then reboots.
If i take the 512 out then it just hangs on the packard bell screen.

Another dull question, i have two fans in the base unit one over the main chip and one on the power supply. In Bios the cpu fan is working extremely fast and the system fan is not doing anything but if i look at them they both appear to be working (the one on the chip in overdrive) should i replace the fan on the power supply?

sadly neither of the above made any difference, what i don`t understand is why it won`t even boot without the old 512 in? do i need to pair up with another 512 before adding the extra 2 gig?

I think i must be being particually thick so please help
i have a packard bell 1801 witrh 512 ram
i have purchased 2 sticks of 1 gig ram to install.
having tried them in every configuration i can find they just don`t seem to work.
if i leave the 512 in with the extra 2 gig the computer will boot up (if the 512 is out it just stalls on the packard screen) but it continually reboots.
if i start it in safe mode it works fine and the bios tells me that there is 2.5 gig of ram but no matter what i do it won`t start normally.
Please help i`ve installed ram on a previous pc and it was fine but this is really vexing me.
for info running xp the ram (although a different make) is exactly the same spec just bigger

i currently have sky + but am coming towards the end of my contract, we are about to buy a hd tv but i`m not sure that i want to pay sky the £300 for the hd box as in a year i know they will be cheaper, I don`t think we are in a telewest area but can get ntl (are they now the same company) what i love about the sky + is the ability to record more than one show at a time and the easy use epg does the ntl service offer the same, What is tv on demand? can you set the ntl box to record future progs, can you record and play at the same time etc, i`ve checked out the website but none of the basics seem to be covered

help with my pc and graphics

I have had a problem with the graphics card in my pc which has crippled my pc and I have uninstalled the software.I have gone to bot the Packard Bell and ATI sites and downloaded new drivers but neither seem to work. Is there some way other than opening the box of finding out exactly what sort of graphics card I have?

help with ati2dvag please itsdriving me mad

My hp pc has suddenly developed a problem with the ati2dvag dll to the extent where the graphics are a noncence and i can barely see what i am writing now
any help greatfully recieved
running xp
mcafee (clear)
spybot (clear)
if i switch off as suggested it reboots 3 or 4 times before it actually starts and the problem still excists

Pc and xbox 360 help needed

I was lucky enough to be given a 360 for Xmas and am currently trying to set it up to stream content from my PC. To get the best out of the xbox i need to have Windows Media Centre, sadly I have Power Cinema.
Can I install media centre without it causing havoc with the rest of the PC and if so where Can i get it legally?

I am running anti virus that is up to date,
Have run spy bot but that was clean
Have defragged drive which has made a bit of a differance

Thanks for advice so far;Hw do i stop programs opening on start up? I have tried msconfig and unchecked various boxes but on a restart it opens in Safe mode and tells me to re-instate progs.

help with slow computer

I have a 8 month old desktop that has 160 gig hard drive and 512 ram recently for some completely unknown reason it has started to run very slowly and freezes the fan is also constantly running, i`ve looked at the windows task manager and seem to have between 60 + 70 processes running in the back ground has this got anything to do with the speed and fan and if so how do i stop these things running?

Choosing an mp3 player

I have been asked to look into an mp3 player for my teenage neice and need help,
it has to be itunes compatible but not an ipod hold at least 1000 (ideally 2000) tracks and come in at around £60 any ideas greatfully recieved.

why can`t i get an rf signal from my dvd recorder

i have a yamada dvd recorder that i am trying to connect via booster to my tv upstairs, i ahve already done this with my sky box but using the same cable and set up i get no signal from the yamada, i`ve tried retuning the tv upstairs but to no avail, any suggestions?
