I want to buy a laptop, but I don’t exactly know what to look for when it comes to computer talk, memory etc. I would like it to have a good screen for games and DVD’s. I also download a lot of music, but I don’t think I would need lots of memory for this? A cd-writer isn’t vital. Also, do I buy a modem separately? Can someone give me some suggestions or tell me what things I need to look for in the descriptions of laptops.
As a budget buy the Acer Travelmate series got good reviews over the last year. Typical spec includes:
Centrino 1.5Ghz Processor
XP Home
512Mb Ram
40Gb Hdd (I think)
DVD Rom\CD writer
Internal Modem
10\100 NIC
Wireless networking
Seen it at a few places for about £650 (Staples I think has it with a DVD burner).
If Mac users are "more intelligent than the average computer user," why do they need an operating system designed for complete idiots?
I noticed a nice looking Medion in ToysRus last night too. I think it was similar sort of spec to what Rassilon quotes...£699...it was a nice rounded casing too, looked very modern.
edit:
actually, just found it here, it`s not as good as the one Rassilon mentioned, only a Celeron processor and less ram. Details here.
Mark. :)

My post wasnt definative, but it does require closer examination at Comet & Staples.
£799 at Comet.
Brand ACER
Processor Intel Pentium M
Processor speed 1.4 (710) GHz
RAM 512 Mb
Records CDs 24x
Records DVDs 4x (+&-)
I still think Staples has a better spec & cheaper by £150 as well. Staples price\spec is unconfirmed, but from memory it was close to what I wanted earlier in the year at a very good price.
Laptop prices are cheaper now than what they were & seen some at sub £500.
I think this is the Staples beast concerned (at Dabs).

Comet are doing an Acer for £499. Bought one for my daughter. It`s basic but works fine. Has a 15inch screen, CD writer, DVD reader, 30gig hard drive, Celeron processor (1.5GHz, I think), 256 RAM, XP Home. Bit light on software, e.g. no Microsoft Works.
