looking for a dvd rewriter, limited on PC spec tho

GyneBob (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 19th December 2004, 18:04

I`m looking for a dvd rewriter +r/+rw & -r/rw and hopefully to read dvd-ram, writing to dvd-ram would be a bonus but not vital.
the problem is that my pc only runs at 650mhz (duron), i`ve seen a few drives but they all seem to need 800mhz +. Writting to disk at 16X isn`t an issue, i would be happy with 2X maybe 4X (if my pc can handle it).
Any idea`s would be appreciated :)

I don`t think processor speed will be a problem, especially if you`re not writing at high speeds. I have a 400MHz Celeron with 256MB of RAM, and it quite happily writes DVDs at 4X on a NEC 1300 writer, using DVD Decrypter and Nero.

The 800MHz requirement is probably for a piece of bundled software (DVD player software, perhaps?) rather than the drive itself.

Anyway, I can certainly recommend the NEC writers - the only caveat is that they don`t do DVD-RAM (reading or writing).

I`ve installed DVD`s on much lower spec`s than yours and they`ve been ok-One of my customers has a 6 year old AMD450 with 128mb of RAM and that reads and writes just fine as long as he shurts down any un-necessary apps and programs and leaves the machine alone while it burns. I just put him another 128mb of RAM in and it runs Power DVD ok.

I`ll back up Mike G on NEC drives-excellent stuff and there is a pretty active community that bring out `alternate` firmwares that make them even more useful-my NEC2500A x8 speed +/- writer now ha region free and dual layer writing compatibility.

I have an LG DVD writer which reads and writes Ram. Works fine apart from having problems finding Inkjet printable media that will burn at 4x? Newer drives should not have a problem though.

You will also find Pioneer drives read ram and I think samsung and Hitachi as well?

The 108 is less than £50 now and does read RAM. Double layer and 16x.
