DVD Player won`t recognise some disks

davidedlin (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 28th January 2005, 19:58

I run a Pioneer DVR-S606 USB DVD-R drive, and am currently having a problem reading some disks that it has written.

A couple of weeks ago I was experiencing major HDD problems, so I burned my entire 800+ album MP3 collection to DVD-R disk using the Pioneer (all disks finalised), among other stuff that I did not wish to lose. The MP3 albums all went onto separate disks from the other backed-up data--13 disks in all.

Last night, however, when I attempted to restore these albums back to the new 200GB drive the DVD drive rejected these disks (I tried about half of them). However, it instantly recognises its own CD-R disks, and DVD-R disks that have been written with other information--just not the MP3 disks. They do, however, play fine in the DVD player on my home setereo system.

After inserting a disk, the computer disk drive begins a low hum, though does not reach full speed when attempting to read these disks. If I click on my J drive in the drive list in Windows Explorer, I get the Insert Disk error box asking me to "Please Insert a Disk into Drive J". Resetting the drive using the switch at the back does not help.

Could this be a Windows read failure, or is the laser simply not recognising these files? Many thanks for your assistance.

if it`s working fine in a set top player but not on the pc, i would imagine the problem is with the pc`s dvd player, might be worth investing in a cheapie dvd rom drive to check.

Thanks--I have thought about that. I`ve been looking at those double-sided writers and have resisted the temptation so far. But is there are any other possibility other than spending the money on a new drive with no guarantee that it might read them either? After all, the Pioneer has no problem reading other data written to the same brand disks on the same day. Out of about 30 disks, only the MP3-filled disks won`t play. How odd!

it`s not nesesarily (sp) new recorder you need, a new dvd rom (player) should do the job, i allways try to have a seperate reader & writer, just to cut down on the wear & tear on the more expensive writer :)

Also try the discs in a friends DVD drive. if ok there then your drive could be faulty but before you go out and buy new try a lens cleaning disc.

If it ain`t broke hit it harder
Damn Nicotine

I now KNOW why these disks won`t play, but not how to fix the problem (UPDATE)

Since yesterday I believe I have established the reason why only these 13 disks are not recognised by the drive, yet all other burned DVD disks read and play fine.

When I wrote the data to the disks (using Nero 6.0), all the MP3 album directories (representing artists) were hidden, because when the directories were on my hard drive all I wanted to see in Windows Explorer were the corresponding M3U (playlist) files to click on (so I hid the directories). I did not burn the M3U files to disk--just the albums.

This means that when I insert one of these disks, Windows is reading a whole bunch of hidden directories (though the files within them are not hidden). Setting Windows to "Show Hidden Files" has not helped, however. I suspect that all DVD drives will have the same problem reading these disks.

So, the question now is: How do I get Windows to recognise a DVD disk that contains only hidden directories?
