Page 1 of CAN`T GET START MENU UP

had a virus recently. since then i have not been able to choose items from the start menu e.g. my computer, control panel etc. don`t seem to be able to close programs down. keep getting message about dr. watson program. please help!

That still sounds like you`re infected with a virus, I`m afraid - the Dr Watson program you refer to may not be the real deal.

Do me a favour and do CTRL ALT & DEL, click on the processes tab and advise me what`s listed (probably a lot). Can take it from there...

I think he wanted you to actually post what processes are running. You would ordinarily have a lot running, we just need to ID them.

is there any way to copy list of processes, to save having to write them al down?

the easiest thing to do is to open up google and type in each process into google to see if its harmful or not. The first page that comes up always tells you what you need to know.

For example

lsass.exe, which is a perfectly normal windows process, but can be hi-jacked by a MyDoom variant

You could do a screengrab of the open window, but I don`t know how much contol you have of the PC

Thats what I was thinking. But then, of course theres the whole thorny issue of finding somewhere to host the picture, uploading the bastard and then tagging it so it displays on the site.

No, offence, but I think, given the OPs apparent lack of Mad Skillz you would be on a hiding to nothing.

use this site to check up on the various processes. Note that if you just click on one of the listed processes it helpfully adds the search box which is missing from the main page.
Then make a note of any listed as nasties or not listed at all and post the list here as that should be a much smaller list
