Page 1 of is this a good dvd rewriter to get?

Hello all, need a bit of help please. I`m not particularly techy, but want to get a dvd rewiter to be able to backup my pc - my husband doesn`t fancy spending another month loading our rather large cd collection if our pc were to crash! - plus save digital photos. Probably not going to use it for films etc. So we don`t need anything too flashy. My brother has spotted a deal on Amazon which is a Samsung Dual Layer 16x DVD +/- RW Internal Writer + Roxio Creator 7 bundle for £54.96. This sounds a good deal, so would I be getting something good, or is it a turkey? Thanks for your help.

I`ve not heard anything about Samsung writers. With that software it may be cheaper than buying them separately but you don`t really need it.. Do you have other burning software? You can get a legit version of Nero from the likes of SVP for £3.49 to do the sort of thing you want to do..
I would go for one of the later Pioneers (109) or the later NEC`s (3540) - both are around £35.

I just ordered a Pioneer one for my mum from BigPockets for £40.74 inc p&p yesterday. Very impressed with my Pioneer drive in my PC.

I saw that Samsung on in Netto`s window got £59.99 - very nearly went and got it, glad I checked online!

I wouldn`t recommend it because that Samsung DVD writer comes with DVD burning software anyware at a cost of just over £40 (I believe the software you receive is Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD version 8.0) which is far more useful than the limited Nero software bundled with other drives.

The drive is very fast and one of the quickest on the market for writing to DVD -R but it will have problems detecting some blank media.

My recommendation is for a Lite On model or one of the drives based on Lite On mechanism (I believe all Sony ones are based on Lite On). Firmware upgrades on Lite On drives tend to work better on blank media than on other brands.

A Liteon 1633 drive costs around £35 including a cut down Nero software suite.

As far as I can tell the oem version of Nero that comes with the 1633 (at least here in the USA) is the full version of Nero ,and in either case the serial number that comes with the oem version will UNLOCK the downloadable Nero Ultra Edition trial :)
