Page 1 of mp3 - Mac to PC
PCs & Mobiles Forum
Hi everyone..
A friend of mine is changing from using a Mac to a PC - fine. However, neither he, nor me, can work out how to take his mp3s 25gig worth, from the mac to the pc..
I`m assuming that if you use an external drive you will run into problems formatting it between mac and PC, and the only other idea I had - which was to put the tunes onto an Ipod and switch them that way was poopahed, as when you put an ipod onto a new machine it wants to format it..
anyway. thats the long explanation... the real question is..
how do i move mp3s from a mac to a pc... ?
any ideas?
One way would be to setup a local FTP server on the PC and then connect with a crossover cable from the MAC.
If he`s got a router with more than one ethernet port he can actually set a folder up on the mac using web sharing that the pc can access, so he can just drag and drop them.
Since the Mac OSX (which I assume he is using) is based on Linux, there is a nice little program called Samba which emulates the PC file sharing system. So you can just see a link on the Mac`s desktop to a `share` on the PC and copy files to and from.
This is of course assuming that you have set up a network between the two machines (either by crossover cable or through a router of some sorts).
If you do a search in google for Mac PC sharing you`ll find a few helpful documents around.
EDIT - you could also just use Ephpod on the new PC and extract the MP3s from the ipod...which might be quicker! :D
Then just import them into iTunes on the new machine.

A bit late, but if you haven`t already tried anything...
If you want to use an external drive, format it with FAT32, and the Mac and Windows PC can read/write to that with no problems at all.
Alternatively, like some of the suggestions here, if you have a router, then it`s a piece of cake. Share the folders/harddrive of the Windows PC, and connect to it directly from the Finder (use the Network icon) or use Connect to Server (Command-K) and enter the IP address like: "smb://192.168.0.x/sharename", where "x" is the IP address of the Windows PC and "sharename" is the share.

maybe way to late...
but this method is the best IMHO.
get a copy of the software called MacDrive. intstall it on ur pc, and any formated external drive, ipod, cd, dvd, lacie will be readable in the pc once connected.
i use it all the time to trasfer video clips back and forth between platforms.
cheers
None of these are too late at all! much appreciated guys..
If you use an external drive, or have a router to connect both computers, then you will have no problems moving data from one to the other.
