DVI Graphics card help

W@yne (Elite) posted this on Friday, 9th December 2005, 13:33

My dad has an Hitachi 28 inch LCD which he wants to use in the bedroom and as it has] PC inputs both 15 pin VGA ( D sub ) and DVI he also wants to use it as a monitor for the PC so he can get rid of his CRT monitor and save a bit of space.

I was thinking that if he was going to use it for a monitor as well as a TV then he would be better off upgrading his graphics card to one with a DVI output and connecting via DVI rarther than VGA.

He only uses the PC for basic photo editing , letter writing and a little bit of internet use so wouldn`t need a high end card so would something like this ATI Radeon be ok as a budget DVI set up or would he be just as well off sticking to a plain VGA - VGA lead ?

P.s. I`m assuming that the graphics card will be ok in his Asrock motherboard.

Wayne3765 :)

Not used a DVI output on a TV yet but my AGP 8X Radeon X700 has DVI output so may suit your Dads needs.
You can get one for around the £78 (P&P inc) from http://www.overclockers.co.uk
There are probably better cards but I thiought that this one might do :)

Graphics card would have to be AGP, the Asrock motherboard will take it according to the link you gave.
Look on ebuyer or similar site for a cheap AGP graphics card with Dvi on and you will need a Dvi cable. I found my cable on ebay much cheaper.

Thanks for the help all.

I need some more blank discs and fancy trying the Panasonic 8 x DVD-R with Taiyo Yuden dye so I`ll probably tell him to go for the ATI Radeon 9250 128MB (64bit) DDR Graphics Card with DVI TV £25.99 from SVP and to add my discs on his order :).
