Am I being unrealistic? Broadband Provider

roar349 (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 28th December 2005, 14:12

Been on Pipex now for over a year (256 uncapped), currently pay about £13, but am looking to upgrade to 512 (top speed I can get apparently (even on a new estate)) and want to pay no more that £20 uncapped.

Pipex want £30 for an uncapped 512 service (business one, home one is £14.99 with a 1Gb cap), Toucan offer one for £14.99 but have dire reviews.

Ideally I don`t want to pay an activation fee (not sure I would have to if I migrate)

Any suggestions?

If you are in a Telewest cable area, their Blueyonder 2mb service is £17.99 uncapped.

You wouldn`t have to take TV or phone services.

Unfortunately not, and they point to virgin.net who impose a 3Gb limit :/

In an NTL area then? They are similarly priced and I think they`re removing their cap (though possibly only higher packages, I dunno).

Lots of packages will give you what you are looking for, though if you just go off bad reviews, you`d never sign up with any ISP!! Pretty sure both Tiscali and even AOL have unmetered packaged at the price /speed you are looking for, though do a Google (UK only)search for ISP comparisons or something similar if you aren`t too sure about them (loads of bad reviews, though I`ve had both and been very happy with them)

I`m using the AOL 512 service for £17.99 a month - started off at 256 and recently had a letter saying it wil be upgraded to 1mb in early 2006. Even though they say the basic package can`t be used on wireless network , it can, only you can`t use the AOL software (which is shocking anyway!)

No NTL either, AOL looks ok (my brother has it and has had no problems). Do you have to install their software?

Currently looking at adsl4less, icuk and IDnet. Anyone with these/have experience of these?

Don`t have to install their software if you are using it through an adsl router, just put the details into the router through its IP address. AOL is different from a lot of ISPs, the MTU has to be changed to ensure that you can view web pages properly. If you don`t go through an adsl router then yes you will have install their software and use their USB (yak!) modem.

However, setting up a wireless router connection to AOL depends on you router make and model, but if you gogle their wil be plenty of help pages available.

How about Ukonline?

I`m on their uncapped 2mb service at £14.99 per month. Or they`ve got a 8mb service for £24.99!

But if it`s slower speeds there`s 512 at £9.99 or 1mb, also £9.99.
