Firewall recommendations

C(.)(.)PS89 (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 29th December 2005, 21:22

Just built myself a new pc and I rather proud of myself as it`s the first one I`ve built !! :D

I running XP pro on it and I have a AVG anti virus running too ..... Yesterday I visited a site which hit me with 7 virus (yes 7 >:( ) and they self installed AVG found them but they still crashed the pc and stopped it booting up . >:(
Luckily the pc was had nothing on it so I just reformatted and reinstalled XP.

I think that I didn`t update windows enough and that`s how they got in but it`s made me a bit paranoid so what`s a good (free if possible ) firewall ???

I`m new to xp as I`ve been running win2k on my last one and tho I got the odd virus here and there, they never self run/installed when I just visited a website I always had the choice to run/install the junk they prompted me too .... which I always declined !!

Thanks in advance folks !!

i used zonealarm for years without problems, then all of a sudden it seemed to conflict with everything, then they fixed it & it`s excellent again :) i use it alongside AVG & never "really" have any probs :)

Just to back up was has been said before, I`ve been using Zone Alarm for ages now and can`t say that I`ve had any real problems with it and would recommend it.
When you first install it, you`re normally given the option to trial (15 days) the full blown paid for package. I always do this when a major upgrade appears, and the latest version has a number of security features built in to try. At the end of the trial period, I just select to continue using the basic free firewall.

Have you tried switching it on........?

And don`t forget the adware/spyware removal tool u need. I think Ad-Aware and/or Spybot Search & Destroy are the usual recommendations(If u don`t know this already)

Out of interest, does anyone know of any others? I can`t configure the free version of ZoneAlarm so that I can stream music from my PC to my XBox 360.

When I called Micro$oft about the problem - ZoneAlarm was the first thing that the `technician` said.

Cheers
