No Connection

forry1 (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 19th January 2006, 19:29

:B Can anyone help me please.
When we switched on the boys computer today it beeped, the computer was on but the monitor stayed black. We have tried both sockets with the same result.
It seems to be either the connector or the wire, but I don`t know which. There is a disartation stuck in it so it is kind of important it is sorted ASAP.
Any way to find out which is faulty and is it easy to fix the only other time I called the engineer I waited a week! the wire is integrated to the monitor so I cannot just replace it.

Help greatly appreciated

Does the computer emit a series of beeps?
Is the standby light on the monitor (usually located on the on/off switch or near there) flashing or even on?
Is the VGA lead at the back of the PC seated in properly?

:B Yes, the computer emits a series of beeps, yes the standby light is flashing, yes the lead is inserted properly and skrewed in place.

Any suggestions, please?

I have also tried moving the mouse/ tapping the keyboard in case the computer was in standby mode.

OKay, this doesn`t sound like a monitor problem. The beeps suggest the graphics card is at fault. You can try opening up the PC and removing the graphics card and pushing it back in firmly.

:B Thank you. We replaced the Graphics card a week ago, [upgraded]
but we had not thought of that `cause it has been working fine ---- till now!
We will go and try that
Thanks

Have you got a spare monitor to try? Also does your graphics card have TV Out enabling you to connect the PC to a TV to check the graphics card.

If you have your old graphics card still available you could try removing the new one and reinstalling the old one. If it works you know the problem is with the new graphics card. If it is, take it back to the supplier if you can. Tell them you followed anti static procedures installing it (even if you didn`t), otherwise they will tell you that it`s your fault......
Good luck
