Just Bought first Laptop- now how do I go wireless?

colseddon (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 6th December 2006, 17:52

Bought a PACKARD BELL R1938 and was wanting to set up wireless internet.

Currently have NTL cable broadband.

Do I just need a wireless router? or do I need a wireless card or something for laptop?

Does wireless router connect to existing modem?

Any advice appreciated on how and where :-)

Thank you

You need a DSL router (not an ADSL one). I recommend having your laptop connected to the router at first to set it all up, then move on to wireless once it`s all working.

Give NTL a ring, Telewest (now owned by NTL) are giving away free routers for those willing to sign another 12-month contract so I imagine NTL are doing the same. If you are happy with the ISP and not planning on moving house, etc, you could do this.

You may need a wireless card or adaptor, but it may be built-in so have a look at your spec.

Your "output" from the NTL modem goes to this router first & Then you can feed another pc via RJ45 cable or wireless. Its best to use RJ45 first to install the Router & then set wireless for your laptop.
I have the output" from the NTL modem to my main desktop via RJ45 cable & 2 desktops & a laptop via "wireless" connection.
Make sure that it is encriypted, otherwise your neighbours will have free internet access !!!!

Ebay item no 120060953050 is a different one. I would NOT buy the Ebay one, because for £39.99 you can get a brand new Router Plus a USB Adapter with 12 months warranty from a high street dealer.
The model numbers are as below.
LINKSYS SPEEDBOOSTER 125g ROUTER WRT54GSUK
AND USB ADAPTER WUSB54GS
