avg and avg anti-spyware - query

777PP (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 27th April 2007, 06:28

My dell Latitude takes well over 5 mins to boot up. Somehow I`ve got avg and avg anti-spyware, where in the past I`ve generally stuck to avg (and Zone Alarm).

Do I really need both, or what else can I do to speed up booting process.?

Also, I`ve noticed a "green lock with no. 9" that stays on the keypad, is this normal.

Thanks

the green lock with a 9 in num lock on, whether you have it on or not is personal preference, since you`re using a laptop, you probably don`t have a num pad, so it probably doesn`t matter! Sorry if that;s vague.

As for your other question, I`m not too familiar with AVG anti-spyware.

it is a different product to anti-virus. anti-spyware`s concern is tracking cookies etc which report on what websites etc you`ve been to, and other apps which may have got onto your system which report browsing habits.

One thing that speeds up my latitude booting up is turning off wireless networking, and bluetooth, but if you need that, then you don`t want to turn them off. Fn and F2 does it on mine.

When you say "boot up"...what appears to take the most time?
Is it quick to get into the desktop but then slow to respond because of programs loading?
Or does it take ages to actually get to the desktop?

You can check what programs are configured to start using the utility called "msconfig"
(Start, Run, then type "msconfig" without the quotes)

There`s also a registry setting that you can enable that would tell you what`s being loaded during the Windows startup (displays the exe/dll`s that get loaded). That may also help...just need to find the details on it! :D

You can check the June issue of Computer Shopper pg 126 as they have a section on cleaning your pc and making it run faster including step by step guides on how to run msconfig (as per the post above) amongst many other things to make your pc run faster.

Incidentally, I run AVG and Zone Alarm and have no problems (touch wood).

Hope it helps.

Chris - do you image it or do the full XP install?
If so, how`d you get on with the XP registrations? My OEM copy (bought from Overclockers) keeps saying number of installations exceeded whenever I try it and I have to go through calling them up again.

always fresh install, mainly becuse i`ve usually changed some bit of hardware or other between installations :) as for the instalation exceeded thing, just ring M$ up (on the "toll free" number) takes about 2 minutes & they give you a fresh activation code, just remember to write it down then you can use it the next three times ;)

i`ve heard of people having problems getting new codes on OEM versions, but i`ve done it quite a few times (more than 10) & never had any issues. but then, i`m quite the charming c*** when i need to be ;)

tho, tbh, i am seriously thing about giving Ubuntu a "proper" try as my full time OS as i`m quite taken with the way it works :)

Thanks for getting back. I now know what 9 in padlock does. But still very slow loading up or even accessing an item (Outlook express) from my desktop. I`ll try getting an issue of June Computer shopper as recommended. Would like to avoid format if possible.

"When you say "boot up"...what appears to take the most time?
Is it quick to get into the desktop 5 mins
but then slow to respond because of programs loading then 8 mins to access anything on desk top?Or does it take ages to actually get to the desktop about 2 mins?

You can check what programs are configured to start using the utility called "msconfig"

Checked and have about 52 processes running when loading up
Performance jumping from 2% to 40%
PF Usage max 325MB

Also noticed AVG: is in constant state of telling restart PC to complete update, but doesn`t always update. Still black and white.

Still painfully slow. Have tried uninstalling AVG and doing a clean install instead of update still no difference in speed.

Zone Alarm is now playing up and wants to update but has difficulty connecting to its update site, taking up to 5 mins.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.
