utter despair with P2P and router

cassius76 (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 26th May 2007, 11:41

Ever since I got My new router, Azureus started to go wrong and even U torrent is acting up. Everytime I turn P2P apps on they disconnect the internet. I have tried port forwarding and that just messes up my Xbox Live and disconnects my internet altogether., doing it is like astro physics and don`t get me started on static IP addresses .. I am utterly hacked off now and don`t know what to do to get my P2P progs showing the little green lights like they used to. Downloading now is a nightmare.. speeds up and down and not at all!

Does anyone have an idiot proof way of getting P2P working with a Linksys BEFSR41 ?

My netgear was similar issues.
Ended up, set up port forwarding as per that website....
Set a static IP for the main computer DUN connection.

Set everything else to "Auto" to auto-obtain their DNS and IP, ONLY the wired main connected PC is the static unit.
Works fine for me, good speeds and everything works (including the Wii...but Mario Strikers demo was crap :D )

I tried setting up a static IP but It just seemd to cock everything up. I wasn`t sure when I had created a static IP where to put it and how it worked.. my brain started to melt so I had to re set everything again back to the way it was... I`m wondering if I`m missing something.....

When you gave your PC at static IP, did you give the XBox one too?

Also did you enter the router`s IP as the DNS or did you enter your ISP`s DNS? You should be able to see the ISP primary and secondary DNS on your router`s Status page (WAN).

So on my connection in Network Connections it goes:

IP: 192.168.1.x (different last digits for each device)
Default Gateway: 192.168.x.x (router IP)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Primary DNS: 62.31.144.39 (ex-Blueyonder)
Secondary DNS: 195.188.53.175

Then forward the port in your router for your PC`s IP. Should be something like "Virtual Servers" then enter the end of your fixed IP and the port number in the boxes. If you have more than 1 PC to torrent on, set a different port on each one and forward them.

Is there a defult login and password for Netgear? I`m trying to port forward my PC now that I`ve changed from Belkin to Netgear?

Should be printed on the box and/or in the manual.

Pretty sure I didn`t do that. I followed the instructions from portforward.com for setting up a static ip and I`m sure nothing in the guide says to do that. I`ll try it out tonight. Thanks so much for the help. I`ll report my findings soon...

It doesn`t, and I ran into similar problems until someone mentioned DNS. :)
