Office 2008 - Mac

bassman_uk (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 8th March 2008, 09:00

Anyone used this yet?
If so, is it worth having over Office 2004?

Awaiting your views/experience/opinions on this :)

Am interested too. Am running Office 2004 here as well.
Its a little slower than running the equivalent on Windows, but it works well enough, and MS Entourage does the job well for Hotmail access.

Yeah. Got it. Entourage is a lot better, word and excel are more confusingly laid out (to match their windows counterparts) and they all use the .docx and .xlsx thing because its jumping on the xml bandwagon, which means you have to run 99% of documents in compatibility mode because nothing else supports all the xml bollocks.

Its arguably worth getting because entourage actually works properly now, but the rest of it is a bit of a pain in the arse to be honest. Im sure a power user could find something worth having though.

Nick - in what way did Entourage not work before?

I use it for Hotmail and it works pretty well for that. Admittedly I`m not using the calendar functions (or any of the others to be honest).

Companies that have p**sed me off so much that I will never use them again and I hope you dont either....
Jacks Fish & Chips of Cambridge ridiculously overpriced and overpackaged chips. £1.20 for a stupidly small portion of chips - they need to go up north for a good lesson in fish and chips
Alloy Bodies of Manchester - The Grand Daddy & Benchmark for shockingly poor customer service.
Capital Bank Leasing who are part of [B]BOS
& are f**ing useless & struggle to action the smallest request but are fantastically efficient at taking money out of my account
[B]Abbey National
Absolutely diabolical service - how hard is it to change £60 of coins into notes????
....more coming soon no doubt.....

I kind overstated the fact that it works, but it works better than it did before.

long story short is that loads of features dont work properly with an exchange server (especially a creaky old 2k one). The shared calendar and public folders didnt work before but now they do (to a point, it doesnt store a local copy but polls the exchange server for every event each time you turn it on which takes f***ing ages to update, especially when youve got a 7 year old shared diary).

it also now works with delegates, to a point. You have to set up all delegate privileges on a PC on outlook otherwise you cant open anyones folders.

Again, some of this is because we are running exchange 2k, but its still a massive pain in the arse.

Could be worse, though. The old version of entourage in Office X kept failing because it couldnt understad the IMAP settings, so it was next to f***ing useless. You had to use the OS9 version of the `proper` outlook, which was a pain as it saps system resources emulating backwards.

Ah.....the joys of a mixed domain......(although an OSX server is on the shopping list for next years budget...)
