Dell Laptop Problem

NobbyT (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 24th May 2008, 09:13

Hey

I wonder if anyone can shed a little light on a problem I am having with a Dell Inspiron 1000?

I have this laptop just for browsing the internet, but it keeps turning itself off.

One moment I`ll be happily surfing, when the next the hard drive stops and the screen goes black, no Blue Screen Of Death, nothing. Now the strange thing is that the battery light remains on, hinting that it hasn`t actually lost power!?!!? But the only way top continue is to forcefully power off the laptop and reboot.

The issue happens intermittently, ranging from 2mins of use to 5 hours!

This is very annoying, does any one have any ideas? Any help/opinions will be gratefully received.

Cheers

Not experienced this with my Acer but I know that there is a helluva heat blows out the vents so maybe some of the vents are obstructed .
Check underneath and on the sides to make sure nothing is blocked and make sure the area around the vents on the side are not obstructed by anything that may affect the exhausting air .

All I can think of Nobby :)

Faulty Motherboard springs to mind....

I say that purely because this is exactly what happened to my last desktop PC (running xp). I swapped out abolutely everything except the CPU which i re-seated and the motherboard .

I finally admitted defeat and gave up in the end and bought a new (re-furb) from Dell as i was just spending my whole life trying to get it up and running again. I also wanted a new 500 gb HD and more Ram and so that factored into my overall spend decision together with what i would have needed to spend on the mobo.

Hey guys

Thanks a lot for your help. I shall try checking the vents as suggested, but if it turns out to be the motherboard, I think I may as well bin it, majority of the time a new motherboard costs more than the laptop is worth.

Thanks again!!
